Here is the first in a series of "Legislative Update Videos" from the Tim Utz 50A House Campaign.

From The Sunlight Foundation

Dear Sunlighter,

Here's something terrifying: Congress passed the $787 billion Stimulus Bill and we're pretty sure the people who voted on that legislation didn't actually read it. And for sure you didn't have a chance to look at it, either. That's not the first time important legislation has rushed through Congress in a matter of hours. By hurrying to vote on these bills, members of Congress might miss an earmark or tax break that could have a lasting impact on you and your community.

Congress just passed the largest piece of spending legislation in history and no one Read The Bill. Let's make sure this doesn't happen again. Demand that they Read The Bill and sign our petition now:

http://www.ReadTheBill.org/petition

Read The Bill is a commonsense solution -- we want Congress to post all bills online for 72 hours before they are debated. That gives members of Congress - and you - three days to read legislation and consider how it could potentially affect each of us in our daily lives. A 72-hour rule would also give you a chance to let your representative in Congress know what you like, or don't like, about a bill before he or she votes.

Here are some examples of bills that were passed when members of Congress only had a few hours to read each one.

-TARP bailout bill (2008): rushed through Congress with few provisions for accountability

-Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008: Congress' Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bailout

-PATRIOT Act (2001): rushed through Congress and, consequently, expanded the federal government's ability to gather intelligence, engage in domestic surveillance and secret searches and detain immigrants with little restraint

Just yesterday, the House of Representatives approved a $410 billion omnibus spending bill. Unlike the Stimulus Bill, it was posted online for two days, which allowed members of Congress - and citizens, alike - to read and discuss the bill for a short period of time before it was considered in Congress. But even that is not enough. Let's remove the disparity and uncertainty that makes some bills available while others are cloaked in secrecy. Let's continue to allow everyone to Read The Bill for at least 72 hours before it is considered in Congress.

Help us urge Congress to take some time to Read the Bill-- sign our petition today.

Thank you for your time on this important matter.

Sincerely,
Ellen Miller

Do Americans have real Representation?

Auto Bailouts Will Test Representation of Americans
CHQ Blog – If the American public says one thing, and our representatives do another, do we have real representation in Washington? This question will be tested as the government decides whether to extend American automakers another $21 billion in taxpayer-backed loans.  Nearly three-quarters of Americans say 'no,' but will the feds ignore us again? Obama's Spending Plans Clash with Call for Fiscal Restraint
CHQ News – President Barack Obama contradicted his call for fiscal discipline after announcing plans for a 2010 budget that include massive increases in government spending.  Is a $1.75 trillion deficit his idea of "fiscal restraint"? [read article here]

My Heritage.org: Unpacking Obama's Speech

from The Loft
by Bobby Eberle

Big Brother is Watching...As We Drive

"Ok, stay with me here... I know many of you are stunned with the turn our country is taking down the path to socialism. There is massive spending of money we don't have on programs we don't need. There are unprecedented amounts of government control about to be heaped on the American citizen. From banks to automobile manufacturers to health care, the federal government is injecting itself into the lives of Americans like never before."

Misery Tour

'State legislators have concluded their 24-city "Misery Tour", otherwise known as “listening sessions.” The series of town hall-style meetings were promoted as opportunities for citizens to provide their input and ideas on Minnesota’s projected $6-7 billion budget deficit.

The reality of the so-called “listening sessions” didn’t live up to their billing. Liberal legislators critical of Governor Pawlenty’s budget help orchestrate these events to showcase the “misery” that government workers assert would result from modest cuts in state spending. The government employee’s union, AFSCME, directed their members to testify at the meetings and even told them what to say. Most legislators clearly gave government workers preference when determining who would be allowed to speak and in what order. Representative Gene Pelowski (DFL, Winona) sent an email to a long list of Winona-area government workers describing the purpose of the listening sessions as being to get testimony from affected programs in every level of government, education, health care or service impacted by the cuts suggested by the Governor’s state budget. In the email, he instructs government workers, “We would ask you to focus your comments on the impact of the Governor’s budget including what is the harm to your area of government or program. Please be as precise as possible using facts such as number of lay offs, increases in property taxes, cuts in services, increases in tuition, elimination of programs.” '

NEWS RELEASE

OBAMA LIED TO GUN OWNERS, SAYS CCRKBA; ATTACK PLAN REVEALED BY HOLDER
BELLEVUE, WA – As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama deliberately and repeatedly lied to America’s 90 million gun owners across the country when he insisted that he would not try to take away anyone’s firearms, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, reacting to yesterday’s remarks by Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder that the president will seek to reinstate the ban on semi-automatic firearms, said Obama “knew he was lying to the nation because his own website touted his plan to revive the gun ban and make it permanent.”

“We warned America that Obama’s ‘support’ for the Second Amendment was empty rhetoric,” he stated, “and now Holder’s disclosure has confirmed it. Obama was lying, and now gun rights may be dying.”

Several times on the campaign trail, Obama told voters “I’m not going to take your guns away.” He said it at rallies in Duryea, Pennsylvania and in Boise, Idaho. He also told a news conference that “Lawful gun owners have nothing to fearÂ…I think people can take me at my word.”

“Right now,” said Gottlieb, “I wouldn’t take Obama’s word if he said it rains a lot in Seattle. Apparently, law-abiding gun owners have nothing to fear unless they own sport-utility rifles, semiautomatic shotguns, handguns and any other firearm that Obama and his anti-gun attorney general don’t like.

“Thanks to Eric Holder, who has been far more honest than his boss about his anti-gun philosophy, it is now clear that the new president doesn’t support the Second Amendment at all,” he observed. “American gun owners should remind Democrats in Congress that the Second Amendment means what it says, especially when the president doesn’t.”

"Two Great Pro-gun Amendments In The Senate--
But Harry Reid stands in our way!

Thank you for all your activism so far!

Senator John Ensign of Nevada offered his amendment to
repeal D.C.'s draconian gun ban today."

ACTION:  Contact your two Senators and urge them to vote
AGAINST cloture on S. 160 until the Senate has had an
opportunity to vote for all pro-gun amendments. As usual,
you can use the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center at
http://gunowners.org/activism.htm to send your Senators the
pre-written message below.

----- Pre-written letter -----

Dear Senator:

I urge you in the strongest terms to vote against cloture
on S. 160 until senators have had an opportunity to vote on
pro-gun amendments, such as those offered by Senators
Ensign and Thune.

The issue is not whether to give D.C. a voting
representative.  The issue is whether to impose a "gag
rule" on those who oppose the District's efforts to use its
draconian gun laws to undermine gun rights in other states.

Cloture -- invoked for the cynical purpose of protecting
D.C.'s anti-gun laws and to silence other pro-gun voices --
is not a vote on D.C. representation.  It is a vote against
the Second Amendment.

Please let me know you do not favor silencing pro-gun
voices.  Please do not vote for cloture until those voices
are heard.

And once debate is allowed to continue, I ask that you vote
in favor of the Ensign amendment to repeal the District's
gun ban, as well as the Thune amendment for national
concealed carry reciprocity.

Sincerely,

(Place your Name, City, and State here)
