ARRA News Service: Jihadist Attorneys at Dept of Justice

by Gary Bauer, Contributing Author: When Barack Obama ran for president, he often promised he would not appoint a lobbyist who represented various U.S. companies to jobs in the government. Why? Because there was too much risk that those lobbyists would continue to represent the business interests instead of the public good. Now comes some astonishing news. Since January 2009, Obama has appointed to jobs in the Justice Department nine individuals who previously represented or advocated for the jihadist thugs being held at Guantanamo Bay♠, Cuba. Yes, you read that right. read the rest...click below. ARRA News Service: Jihadist Attorneys at Dept of Justice

Ayn Rand Study Group Presents…

Capitalism: The Only Moral Social System
By Craig Biddle

Capitalism is widely recognized as the practical social system because, to the extent that it is implemented, it leads to wealth and prosperity. But this same system is widely regarded as immoral because it enables people to act fully in their own self-interest -- that is, to act on their own judgment and to keep, use, and dispose of the product of their own effort.

Mr. Biddle will demonstrate why, far from making capitalism immoral, the fact that it enables everyone to act selfishly and own property is what makes it not only the most practical but also the only moral social system ever devised.

Admission: Students with ID – Free Non-Students - $5

If you would like additional information on the campus club talk, please contact the group at aynrandstudygroup@gmail.com. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.

Please come and enjoy this event and support the Ayn Rand Study Group at the University of Minnesota!

Craig Biddle is the editor of The Objective Standard and the author of "Loving Life: The Morality of Self-Interest and the Facts that Support It". He is currently writing a book on the principles of rational thinking and the fallacies that are violations of those principles. In addition to writing, he lectures and teaches workshops on ethical and epistemological issues from an Objectivist perspective.

About the Event
Many Americans--particularly younger ones--are looking for answers to social justice issues like poverty and are attracted to the Left's promises of help in these areas. But good intentions and lofty promises aren't enough. Conservatives are concerned about those in need, and are not willing to accept the same old way of doing business via the welfare state--which has hurt the very people it was intended to help.

Human dignity demands a better approach--one that is built around personal responsibility and mutual responsibility through relationships, not government redistribution. Conservatives believe effective solutions based on sound economic principles and an understanding of the role of civil society institutions have the most promise for achieving a free and just society.

Conservative policy has proven effective when it comes to problems of social breakdown, and we need to tell that story. Heritage is taking a leading role in the development of policy and coalition partnerships that will help advance this conservative vision of social justice.

Finally ..... A Sensible Gun Registration Plan That Will Work (Satire at its finest or is it?)

Vermont State Rep. Fred Maslack has read the Second Amendment to the U.S.. Constitution, as well as Vermont 's own Constitution very carefully, and his strict interpretation of these documents is popping some eyeballs in New England and elsewhere.

Maslack recently proposed a bill to register "non-gun-owners" and require them to pay a $500 fee to the state. Thus Vermont would become the first state to require a permit for the luxury of going about unarmed and assess a fee of $500 for the privilege of not owning a gun

Maslack read the "militia" phrase of the Second Amendment as not only affirming the right of the individual citizen to bear arms, but as a clear mandate to do so. He believes that universal gun ownership was advocated by the Framers of the Constitution as an antidote to a "monopoly of force" by the government as well as criminals

Vermont 's constitution states explicitly that "the people have a right to bear arms for the defense of themselves and the State" and those persons who are "conscientiously scrupulous of bearing arms" shall be required to "pay such equivalent." Clearly, says Maslack, Vermonters have a constitutional obligation to arm themselves, so that they are capable of responding to "any situation that may arise."

Under the bill, adults who choose not to own a firearm would be required to register their name, address, Social Security Number, and driver's license number with the state. "There is a legitimate government interest in knowing who is not prepared to defend the state should they be asked to do so," Maslack says

Vermont already boasts a high rate of gun ownership along with the least restrictive laws of any state ... it's currently the only state that allows a citizen to carry a concealed firearm without a permit. This combination of plenty of guns and few laws regulating them has resulted in a crime rate that is the third lowest in the nation

" America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards."

This makes sense! There is no reason why gun owners should have to pay taxes to support police protection for people not wanting to own guns. Let them contribute their fair share and pay their own way.

The Fable of Market Meritocracy - Reason Magazine

"It's a good thing that French President Nicolas Sarkozy is brimming with amour-propre because he certainly did not earn any amour from the business elite gathered in Davos last month. In a bombastic riposte—delivered, no doubt, in one of his fabulously expensive designer suits—he proclaimed that the recent financial meltdown had demonstrated that letting markets decide executive compensation was "morally indefensible." "There are remuneration packages that will no longer be tolerated because they bear no relationship to merit," he said." The Fable of Market Meritocracy - Reason Magazine A Socialist is a Socialist...perhaps arrogance and ignorance goes hand in handm, heavy booted down the slimy slope to hell.

SAF, NRA VICTORY: COURT STRIKES
DOWN SEATTLE PARK GUN BAN

SEATTLE, WA - A King County Superior Court judge has ruled in favor of a lawsuit filed by the Second Amendment Foundation and National Rifle Association, striking down a ban on guns in city parks because it violates Washington State's long-standing preemption statute.

Judge Catherine Shaffer ruled from the bench that the gun ban, adopted under former Mayor Greg Nickels, violates Washington's law, which placed sole authority for regulating firearms in the hands of the State Legislature. That law was adopted in 1983 and amended in 1985, and has served as a model for similar laws across the country.

SAF and NRA were joined in the lawsuit by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, the Washington Arms Collectors and five individual plaintiffs.

"This is a great victory for the rule of law and Washington citizens," said SAF Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. "Greg Nickels was so blinded by his personal hatred for firearms owners and his own arrogance that he imagined the city under his control could simply ignore state law. That arrogance cost Nickels his job last year. We repeatedly warned him not to push a gun ban, but he refused to listen.

"It is also a victory for the Legislature," he observed, "because this case affirms the intent of lawmakers in 1983 to prevent cities like Seattle from creating a nightmare patchwork of conflicting and confusing firearms regulations. The ruling solidifies the legislature's authority and sends a message to city and county governments to stop meddling with the rights of Washington citizens."

Gottlieb suggested a review of local ordinances may now be in order, so that city and county governments can be compelled to remove old gun regulations or face legal consequences.

"This ruling puts anti-gun local officials on notice that legally-armed citizens have rights, too," Gottlieb stated.

The Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nations oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 650,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control. SAF has previously funded successful firearms-related suits against the cities of Los Angeles; New Haven, CT; and San Francisco on behalf of American gun owners, a lawsuit against the cities suing gun makers and an amicus brief and fund for the Emerson case holding the Second Amendment as an individual right.

Those who've been spreading global-warming fears must be waking up each morning and asking themselves: What's going to happen today? A new revelation about the corruption of climate science has become almost a daily event.

On Thursday, the U.K.'s Telegraph reported that India was pulling out of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and forming its own agency to study global warming. Why? Because the Indian government feels it can't depend on the IPCC's work.

Pelosi Writing Out Checks Country Can't Cash

Dear Friends,

During last week’s State of the Union address and again in a meeting with House Republicans, the President repeatedly used rhetoric conservatives could embrace – calling for “fiscal responsibility,” “spending freezes,” and “earmark reform.” While no one expected the President to make a complete 180-degree turn from the previous 12 months of failed economic policies, Americans were optimistic about this indication of fiscal responsibility from Washington.

Unfortunately, just days after the President’s call to rein in spending, he unveiled a new $3.8 trillion budget that once again spends too much, borrows too much, and taxes too much. The President’s budget plan more than doubles the debt, pushes the deficit to a new record of $1.6 trillion in FY 2010, and raises taxes by more than $2 trillion through 2020.

Adding insult to injury, yesterday, Congress wrapped up the week by passing the largest one-time increase in the debt limit in our nation’s history. I joined bipartisan opposition to this $1.9 trillion increase, which raised the debt limit to an unfathomable $14.3 trillion.

Americans continue to tell me they have had enough of Washington’s reckless addiction to wasteful spending. But that hasn’t stopped Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Congressional Democrats from saddling our children and grandchildren enormous debt.

Weekly Waste Watch: $7 Million in Stimulus Funds for a ‘Bridge to No Benefits’

Each week on my Stop the Pork web site, I highlight examples of government waste on the “Weekly Waste Watch” page. This week’s installment comes from Thedford, Neb., where $7 million in stimulus funds were spent on a “Bridge to No Benefits.”

The purpose of the bridge was to help 168 residents avoid a 30-second wait at a local train crossing. But according to Mike Hodges, a local business owner, crossing the bridge won’t even help residents avoid the current 30 second wait time — it will actually take longer to cross the new roundabout bridge. Will the bridge at least create jobs? Not for Thedford. Town Chairman Judy Taylor complained that the bridge contract was awarded to a Colorado company that is using their own workers. In fact, not one full-time job will be created through the construction of this $7 million bridge. CNN closed a segment about this bridge by saying: “No economic benefit, no full time jobs, and a lot of taxpayer dollars used to cross the road.”

Child Tax Credit

Child Tax Credit "When it comes to child Care, Why won't the President Let Parents Decide?" "If these cuts are not made permanent, next year American families will face one of the largest tax increases in history. On average, taxes would increase $1,800 per taxpayer, and 48 million married couples will face an average hike of $3,007, with many paying more than if they merely cohabited. A family of four earning $40,000 would see a tax increase of over $2,300. If the President's tax relief is allowed to expire at the end of 2010, Americans will pay about $280 billion more in taxes each year." Please sign the petition to President Obama and the Congressional Leadership to make permanent and increase the child tax credit - and let parents decide how to spend the money they earn!

As the GOP claims "great" victories in states like Massachusetts and Virginia, gun owners should be hesitant to jump on the GOP bandwagon. On Tuesday evening, GOP pundits were championing Congressman Mark Kirk's victory in the Illinois Republican U.S. Senate primary. Many of those same talking heads are enthusiastically trumpeting Representative Kirk's chances to win the Senate seat formerly occupied by President Barack Obama. Is this Republican success reason for gun owners to be optimistic? Hardly. Congressman Kirk has long been an enemy of gun owners, supporting legislation to close the so-called "gun-show loop-hole", ban certain types of semi-automatic rifles and require background checks to purchase ammunition. Kirk is not the only anti-gun Republican looking for a promotion. His gun-hating compadre Congressman Mike Castle of Delaware is preparing to make a run for the Senate as well. What does this mean for gun owners?"
