Re: Important Ordinance #1559-Meeting Oct 13-7:00 p.m. & Repub Meeting Schedule

We have something that we need to be looking at immediately!  At Monday's meeting of the Columbia Heights City Council they will have the 1st reading of ordinance #1559.  Go to the City of Columbia Heights website/city council/Agenda & Minutes/ October 13 Agenda.  Search through the pages and look for Item B, 1st reading of Ordinance 1559, then look at page 152 for the actual ordinance.  You will see the resurrection of RIBS in the form of the city wants to "protect us" from property that has been abandoned.

The city is trying to get RIBS back in another form.  They need to get this income back into the 2009 budget and they are determined to do that.  They lost the initial $30,000 that they were expecting from income from RIBS and they think they will be able to pick it up this way.

Tim Utz was right, I was wrong, sorry.  It is back and sneaking in behind our backs.

Get the word out that we will need people at Monday night's meeting.  This is extremely important.  It will probably pass at this meeting but we will need people to show up at the next city council meeting as well, October 27th just like we did for RIBS.  We will need people to write letters to the editor for Focus and the Northeaster.  I have a letter to the editor ready to print on another topic for the 23rd and I am only allowed one letter per month.  (Everyone is only allowed one letter per month during political season.)

This is far more important than a BPOU meeting.  Please make sure that any Columbia Heights residents that care come to these meetings.  We need to be informed and we need to stay on top of this.  They will not be giving us a month to rally the troops for the 2nd reading.  Get the word out, NOW!

Donna Schmitt
Candidate for Columbia Heights City Council

Sorry for such notice. I just got this tonight (Sunday). The Columbia Heights City Council is at it, again. Apparently, just like their counterparts in Washington, D.C., they have absolutely NO regard for the will of the people (read the forwarded emails from Teri Barber, Donna Schmitt, and Bob Odden). I think we should pack City Hall on the FIRST reading tomorrow night (Monday, October 13th at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall), and let them know, in no uncertain terms, that we are going to vote them out. Bobby Williams needs to go. The same with Gary Peterson. However, no matter HOW you feel about THEM, we need to stop this latest attempt at passing a RIBS-Lite (you KNOW it will only be "Lite" for a little while, until they can start passing more ordinances to expand its scope).

Bob Odden is correct (see below). This is the "divide and conquer" approach (the Federal government is using the same approach in an attempt to resurrect the Real ID in a new form). If they are this bold in an election year, how out of control do you think they'll be once they know that they have a whole term ahead of them in which to pull their shenanigans.

We need to stop this, NOW. Please attend Monday's council meeting if you can, and let them know that WE THE PEOPLE will NOT stand for this. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Gregory K. Sloat
Chair, Precinct 8
Deputy Chair, HD50-A

P.S. For those of you who were planning on attending Monday's BPOU meeting, I agree with Donna Schmitt. This is FAR more important than a BPOU meeting. I'm going to be at City Hall.

The Columbia Heights City Council will meet tomorrow, Monday October 13th at 7pm to discuss the passage of a RIBS lite ordinance that will only affect new rental property.  This new RIBS ordinance is the divide and conquer approach.  Pick a group most people do not like and grandfather in existing rental so they will not feel a need to fight the ordinance.  Police statistics do not show rental properties to be a source of crime for the City.  It may be true that a few rental properties do have crime associated with them, but this ordinance does not address existing rental property with criminal activity.  Crime statistics are not kept by Columbia Heights so the police can identify areas or addresses where suspects/criminals live.  The site for the agenda is:  http://www.ci.columbia-heights.mn.us/city_council/agenda_minutes.asp

Let other people know so citizens are not fool into ignoring the importance of this RIBS lite proposal.
