Palin a Knockout Choice for McCain

Today, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was chosen as John McCain's running mate. Palin's selection surprised many Republican officials who had speculated about other candidates, amongst such as Minnesota Governor
Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, United States Senator Joseph Lieberman, and former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge . Governor Palin is
an excellent choice and the Kansas Federalist endorses this great conservative Federalist for Vice President.
Sarah Louise Heath Palin (born February 11, 1964)
is the current Governor of Alaska , and the presumptive 2008 Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States.[1] She will be the second female Vice Presidential nominee representing one of the two major American political parties. Born in Idaho and raised in Alaska , Palin played point guard on her high school's championship basketball team. She was the 1984 runner-up in the Miss Alaska pageant, receiving a scholarship that
allowed her to attend the University of Idaho , where she received a degree in journalism.
After working as a sports reporter at an Anchorage television station, Palin served two terms on the Wasilla, Alaska , City Council from 1992 to 1996, was elected mayor of Wasilla (population 5,470 in 2000) in 1996, and ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor in 2002. After charging ethical
violations by state Republican Party leaders, she won election in 2006 by first defeating incumbent governor Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary, then former Democratic Alaskan governor Tony Knowles in the general election.
Palin was born in Sandpoint , Idaho , the daughter
of Charles and Sally (Sheeran) Heath. Her family moved to Alaska when she was an infant. Charles Heath was a science teacher and track coach.[5] The Heaths were
avid outdoors enthusiasts; Sarah and her father would sometimes wake at 3 a.m.to hunt moose before school, and the family regularly ran 5k and 10k races.
Palin was the point guard and captain for the Wasilla High School Warriors, in Wasilla , Alaska , when they won the Alaska small-school basketball championship in 1982; she earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda" because of her intense play.[5] She played the championship game despite a stress fracture in
her ankle, hitting a critical free throw in the last seconds.[5] Palin, who was also the head of the school Fellowship of Christian Athletes, would lead the team in prayer before games.[5]
In 1984, after winning the Miss Wasilla contest earlier
that year, Palin finished second in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant which won her a scholarship to help pay her way through college.[5] In the Wasilla pageant, she played the flute and also won Miss Congeniality. Palin holds a bachelor's
degree in journalism from the University of Idaho where she also minored in politics. Her husband, Todd, is a Native Yup'ik Eskimo.[5] Outside the fishing season, Todd works for BP at an oil field on Alaska 's North Slope [6] and is a
champion snowmobiler, winning the 2000-mile "Iron Dog" race four times.[5]
The two eloped shortly after Palin graduated from college; when they learned they needed witnesses for the civil ceremony, they recruited two residents from the old-age home down the street.[5] The Palin family lives in Wasilla, about
40 miles (64 km) north of Anchorage.[7]
On September 11, 2007, the Palins eighteen-year-old son
Track, eldest of five, joined the Army.[7] He now serves in an infantry brigade and will be deployed to Iraq in September 2008. She also has three daughters: Bristol, 17; Willow, 13; and Piper, 7.[8] On April 18, 2008, Palin gave birth to
her second son, Trig Paxson Van Palin, who has Down syndrome.[9] She returned to the office three days after giving birth.[10] Palin refused to let the results of prenatal genetic testing change her decision to have the baby. "I'm
looking at him right now, and I see perfection," Palin said. "Yeah, he has an extra chromosome. I keep thinking, in our world, what is normal and what is perfect?"[10]
Details of Palin's personal life have contributed to her
political image. She hunts, eats moose hamburger, ice fishes, rides snowmobiles, and owns a float plane.[11][12] Palin holds a lifetime membership with the National Rifle Association.
Palin served two terms on the Wasilla City Council from
1992 to 1996. In 1996, she challenged the incumbent mayor, criticizing wasteful spending and high taxes.[5] The ex-mayor and sheriff tried to organize a recall campaign, but failed.[5] Palin kept her campaign promises, reducing her own salary, as well as reducing property taxes by 60%.[5] She ran for
reelection against the former mayor in 1999, winning by an even larger margin.[5][14] Palin was also elected president of the Alaska Conference of Mayors.[8] In 2002, Palin made an unsuccessful bid for Lieutenant Governor, coming in second to
Loren Leman in a four-way race.
After Frank Murkowski resigned from his long-held U.S. Senate seat in mid-term to become governor, Palin interviewed to be his possible successor. Instead, Murkowski appointed his daughter, then-Alaska State Representative Lisa Murkowski.[5]
Governor Murkowski appointed Palin Ethics Commissioner
of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission,[15] where she served from 2003 to 2004 until resigning in protest over what she called the "lack of ethics" of fellow Alaskan Republican leaders, who ignored her whistle blowing complaints of legal violations and conflicts of interest.[5] After she
resigned, she exposed the state Republican party's chairman, Randy Ruedrich, one of her fellow Oil & Gas commissioners, who was accused of doing work for the party on public time, and supplying a lobbyist with a sensitive e-mail.[16] Palin
filed formal complaints against both Ruedrich and former Alaska Attorney General Gregg Renkes, who both resigned; Ruedrich paid a record $12,000 fine.[5]
Governorship

Germany, July 2007 In 2006, Palin, running on a clean-government campaign, executed an upset victory over then-Gov. Murkowski in the Republican gubernatorial primary.[5] Despite the lack of support from party leaders and being outspent by her Democratic opponent, she went on to win the general
election in November 2006, defeating former Governor Tony Knowles.[5]
Palin said in 2006 that education, public safety, and transportation would be three cornerstones of her administration.[13] When elected, Palin became the first woman to be Alaska 's governor, and the youngest governor in Alaskan history at 42 years of age upon taking office. Palin was also the first Alaskan governor born after Alaska achieved U.S. statehood. She was also the first Alaskan governor not to
be inaugurated in Juneau , instead choosing to hold her inauguration ceremony in Fairbanks . She took office on December 4, 2006.
Highlights of Governor Palin's tenure include a successful push for an ethics bill, and also shelving pork-barrelprojects
supported by fellow Republicans. Palin successfully killed the Bridge to Nowhere project that had become a nationwide symbol of wasteful earmark spending.[10][17] " Alaska needs to be self-sufficient, she says, instead of relying heavily on 'federal dollars,' as the state does today."[11]
She has challenged the state's Republican leaders,
helping to launch a campaign by Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell to unseat U.S. Congressman Don Young[18] and publicly challenging Senator Ted Stevens to come clean about the federal investigation into his financial dealings.[10]
In 2007, Palin had an approval rating often in the 90s.[11] A poll published by Hays Research on July 28, 2008 showed
Palin's approval rating at 80%.[19]
Energy policies
Palin's tenure is noted for her independence from big oil companies, while still promoting resource development.[11][10] Palin has announced plans to create a new sub-cabinet group of advisors, to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions within Alaska.[20]
Shortly after taking office, Palin rescinded thirty-five
appointments made by Murkowski in the last hour of his administration, including the appointment by Murkowski of his former chief of staff Jim Clark to the Alaska Natural Gas Development Authority.[21][22] Clark later pled guilty to
conspiring with a defunct oil-field-services company to channel money into Frank Murkowski's re-election campaign.[23]
In March 2007, Palin presented the Alaska Gasline
Inducement Act (AGIA) as the new legal vehicle for building a natural gas pipeline from the state's North Slope. [24] Only one legislator, Representative Ralph Samuels, voted against the measure,[25] and in June Palin signed it into law.[26]
[27] On January 5, 2008, Palin announced that a Canadian
company, Transcanada, was the sole AGIA-compliant applicant.[28][29] In response to high oil and gas prices, and in
response to the resulting state government budget surplus, Palin proposed giving Alaskans $100-a-month energy debit cards. She also proposed providing grants to electrical utilities so that they would reduce customers' rates.[30] She
subsequently dropped the debit card proposal, and in its place she proposed to send Alaskans $1,200 directly and eliminate the gas tax.[31][32]
Social issues
Palin is strongly pro-life. She opposes same-sex
marriage, but she has stated that she has gay friends and is
receptive to gay and lesbian concerns about discrimination.[13] While the previous administration did not implement same-sex benefits, Palin complied with a state Supreme Court
order and signed them into law.[33] She disagreed with the Supreme Court ruling[34] and supported a democratic advisory vote from the public on whether there should be a constitutional amendment on the matter.[35] Alaska was one of
the first U.S. states to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriage, in 1998, along with Hawaii.[36] Palin has stated that she supported the 1998 constitutional amendment.[13]
Palin's first veto was used to block legislation that
would have barred the state from granting benefits to the partners of gay state employees. In effect, her veto granted State of Alaska benefits to same-sex couples. The veto occurred after Palin consulted with Alaska 's attorney
general on the constitutionality of the legislation.[34]
Budget
In the first days of her administration, Palin followed
through on a campaign promise to sell the Westwind II jet purchased (on a state government credit account) by the Murkowski administration. The state placed the jet for sale on eBay three times. In August 2007, the jet was sold for
$2.7 million.[41] Shortly after becoming governor, Palin canceled a contract for construction on an 11-mile (18-kilometer) gravel road outside of Juneau to a mine. This reversed a decision made in the closing days or hours of the
Murkowski Administration.[42]
In June 2007, Palin signed into law a $6.6 billion
operating budget "the largest in Alaska 's history.[43] At the same time, she used her veto power to make the second-largest cuts of the construction budget in state history. The $237 million in cuts represented over 300 local projects, and reduced the construction budget to nearly $1.6 billion.[44]
Senator McCain's first pick as a presidential leader
with Palin, shows that his future picks for office will consist of good strict constructionists. If McCain is elected President the evidence now points to a continuation of Palin type appointees.

You may have to do some research to see if your browser is RSS ready. I know
Firefox is, but you'll have to check it out. Iwould like some feed back as to how or if it works also, so leave a comment in any comment spot I should get it. I wonder aboaut that also because I don't seem to be getting any comments lerf for me, good, bad or blah.

We have a mountain to climb. We have 60 days left to make the summit. Some plans for September, which is already a week old, are.
1. Get out our yard signs. We have 100 sitting in our building for a week now and not in the street providing exposure.
2. Getting introduction letters out to the soft democrats and independents. We have identified them with voter vault but need help printing, stuffing and mailing letters including paying for postage.
3. Getting involved on Saturday and Sunday with the campaign bus. The bus is a fabulous billboard tool, but requires 6 folks for full effectiveness. The largest group so far is 3 for any trip.
4. House parties.
5. Football home games for Fridley and Columbia Heights. Fridley is this Friday and the principle invited us to attend. Every campaign member should be involved for this event especially. You could not make up this kind of invitation. I am getting details Thursday.
Update, so much has occurred this last 5 days to help our campaign win I could write a book. We are holding a meeting Sunday afternoon at 3:00 in the campaign bus at 42nd and Central. Come at 1:00 to help hold signs, so I seem not the lone ranger to our voters.

Saturday, September 20th, The Conservative Issues Fair will take place at the Bloomington Airport Hilton (by the Mall of America) from 10:00 – 4:00. This event will feature speakers including popular conservative talk host, Jason Lewis, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (6th District), Barb Davis White (5th Congressional District candidate), Congressman John Kline (2nd District) and Ed Matthews (4th Congressional District candidate).
Breakfast with Michele Bachmann is served from 7:00 – 9:00 for those who want to arrive early and Lunch with Barb Davis White runs from 10:00 – Noon.

Washington – With all the talk about Sarah Palin being picked for vice-president, the Club for Growth PAC described the Alaska Governor as a genuine reformer who has taken on wasteful spending in her own state.
“At a time when many Republicans are still clinging to pork-barrel politics, Governor Palin has quickly become a leader on this issue,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. “She is a principled reformer who understands how badly wasteful spending has marred the Republican brand.”
Governor Palin has proven herself to be a reformer unafraid to take on the establishment, which she did early on when she took on the incumbent Republican governor of Alaska in 2006. Only nine months in office, Governor Palin instructed the state to abandon the notorious pork project secured by Alaska’s politicians, the $223 million “Bridge to Nowhere.” While many Republicans in Congress are afraid to antagonize Washington’s biggest porkers, Sarah Palin stood strong for fiscal responsibility. Palin is also a persistent advocate of drilling in ANWR and expanding America’s domestic oil supply in general.

Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns regarding offshore drilling. I appreciate hearing from you, and I am proud to represent you in the United States Congress.
Our nation is facing a crucial time in the debate over our energy future. It is my firm belief that instead of focusing our efforts on finding new ways of exploiting old and harmful sources of energy, we must focus on a responsible approach based on sustainable energy creation and conservation. By any credible estimate, drilling for oil in either the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) or in environmentally sensitive areas will not provide any immediate relief from the current energy crisis nor a long-term solution to meet our future energy needs. A Department of Energy report released in 2007 stated, "The projections in the OCS access case indicate that access to the Pacific, Atlantic and eastern Gulf regions would not have a significant impact on domestic crude oil and natural gas production or prices before 2030."
You may be interested to know that the oil companies currently own the rights to 68 million acres of public land in the United States, land that they themselves estimate to contain 81% of America's federal oil and gas reserves. I believe oil companies should drill on the land they already control which is why I supported H.R. 6515, the Drill Responsibly in Leased Lands Act of 2008. This bill directs the Secretary of the Interior to conduct an oil and gas competitive leasing program in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPRA). The NPRA contains 20 million acres that could produce 10.6 billion barrels of oil; more oil than is believed to be in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). Unfortunately, this legislation failed to pass the House on July 17, 2008.
Rather than drilling for new oil to feed our addiction, I support the creation of new energy sources and efficiency standards that will help to wean our economy off of fossil fuels, especially an updated corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standard which would mandate increased gas mileage in our automobiles. I also supported H.R. 6, the Renewable Fuels, Consumer Protection, and Energy Efficiency Act of 2007, which passed both houses of Congress on December 18, 2007, and was signed into law by President Bush on December 19, 2007. H.R. 6 takes major steps toward reducing American dependency on foreign oil. The bill increases the fuel economy standard to 35 miles per gallon by 2020 for new cars and trucks, reducing American oil consumption by 1.1 million gallons per day by 2020, and saving American families $700 to $1,000 per year at the pump.
Sustainable environmental and economic policies are not only possible but are vital to the future prosperity of our nation. I have long been an advocate for these policies and I will continue my support while I serve you in Congress.

The latest assault from the Columbia Heights City Council
Fellow Residents,
To anyone who was at the Columbia Heights City Council meeting on July 28th, you know that we (all approximately 150 of us!) were able to convince the Council that we would not stand for the passage of their proposed RIBS ordinance (Residential Inspection Before Sale). It was a victory to savor, but also bittersweet, if you read the August 13th issue of of the "Northeaster," where the Mayor and some members of the Council expressed regret over their votes, and of bowing to public pressure. Some of the comments in the "Northeaster" article, if accurate, reflect a general arrogance by those in whom we put our public trust to govern according to the Constitution and the will of We The People. That means that we will have to be vigilant, because you can be assured that this issue will rise again, in some new form or format, it being only a matter of time.
Like rust, it seems that bureaucrats never sleep. They are always looking for some way to make the government a little more intrusive in our lives, and to reach a little more deeply into our pockets.
Having said that, it has come to my attention that once again, they are trying to stick their collective nose where it doesn't belong, and this time into the time-honored tradition of the garage sale, of all things. The GARAGE sale!
Apparently, some people have problems with neighbors who seemingly are always having garage sales, and may actually be running businesses out of their garage (I guess they never heard of "Garage Logic"). I have no information regarding the accuracy of that, so I will not comment. However, the "solution" that the Council is proposing would limit residents to something like two garage sales per year at a duration not to exceed three days. This is going to be (just like with RIBS) the second reading of the ordinance, and they are expecting to pass it, without resistance, or, I assume, even comment.
Now, I commend the Council for their desire to clamp down on unabated free enterprise, being the good little Socialists that they are. However, this smacks very much like the old "one gun a month" legislation proposed by the anti-gunners. You know the drill. Nobody NEEDS to buy more than one gun a month, therefore it shouldn't be a problem. Well, I may not NEED to buy more than one gun a month. I may not even be able to AFFORD to buy more than one gun a month. Heck, I can't even AFFORD to buy more than one gun every few years, but that is NOT the point. The point is it is my RIGHT to buy as many <choose your expletive> guns as I FEEL like, and as my finances allow (and my wife will put up with <grin>), and it's NONE of the government's business!
It's the same with garage sales.
This is just more of the "incrementalism" nonsense we've seen so often, over the years. Not only are they trying to stick the camel's nose under the tent, they feel that if they attempt to do so often enough, we'll get used to it, and won't mind it when the ENTIRE camel waltzes in to say "howdy."
There are better ways to handle this "problem," if indeed, it IS a problem. How about using licensing and zoning regulations to curtail businesses that are not licensed and are operating in residential (as opposed to commercial) areas? I'd be willing to bet that they already have all the laws they need, to address this issue.
Therefore, I'm asking you, if you are so inclined (being among the type of person whom the "Northeaster" article referred to as "they distrust bureacracy"), to once again take some time out of your Monday evening, and join me in "reminding" the City Council that they are the servants of the PEOPLE, and that their job is NOT to sit around, dreaming up ever new and better ways to interfere in our lives. We probably only need about ten people, but the more, the merrier. The Council is also going to address some issues concerning LED signs that promise to cause even more havoc, so you can expect an entertaining meeting. I hope to see you there.

MNLG position on the 3-8ths amendment
There will be a Ballot Initiative to Vote for on Election day. ThisInitiative is to amend the Constitution to authorize a 3/8% increase of the State Sales Tax. The Constitutional Amendment will also permanently dedicate the new revenue generated to the Environment, Culture, and the Arts. Minnesotans for Limited Government endorses a NO vote on the "Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment." First MNLG opposes this initiative on Constitutional grounds. By elevating a collection of appropriation bills to a Constitutional Decree we are limiting our progenies freedom of action in the face of future events. This violates the spirit, if not the letter of the Minnesota Constitution. Constitutions are meant to control government not limit the Citizen’s right to operate that government. Second MNLG opposes this on policy grounds. The original intent of this initiative was to restore and increase wetlands in Minnesota. Out of this idea we now have Santa’s Sleigh loaded with goodies for all good little special interests. However Right Now the Government of Minnesota at the state and county levels; owns, manages and operates over 21,000 miles of drainage ditch. This is according to the Minnesota State Board of Water and Soil Resources. The budget to manage these drainage ditches is about $20 million a year or about $1000.00 per mile. While this is real money to me and you, this is just chump change to those chumps at the Capitol. So the people who want the hardworking citizen taxpayers to pay more money to restore the wetlands (and world culture I guess), are already charging these taxpayers $20 Million a year to drain these same wetlands. MNLG proposes a pilot program to close 5 to 10 % of these ditches. This would cause previously drained wetlands to fill up and rejuvenate themselves and we can save some of the Taxpayer’s money. Demanding the Public to pay for both the restoring and draining of wetlands is Stupid and Tyrannical. MNLG is forced to conclude that the proponents of the “Vote Yes” campaign think that We Citizens of Minnesota are too simple to elect legislators who can wisely manage the Government and that the Constitution must be amended to make sure we don’t “screw up” in the future. MNLG is also forced to conclude that they think that We Citizens of Minnesota are too simple to see the incoherence and ineptitude of a State government whose stated policy is to spend good money draining wetlands that we are now going to pay to restore. MNLG say Vote NO on the "Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment." Better yet Vote HECK NO!

My name is Donna Schmitt and I am running for a seat on the city council. My husband and I have been married for 30 years. The first 7 years of our marriage we moved 7 times. It wasn’t until we found our house in Columbia Heights that we finally found a home and have now lived here for 23 years. I am very proud to live in Columbia Heights. This pride in my community is the reason I am running for Columbia Heights City Council.
I have been watching our community change over the last several years. Neighbors have less time to get to know one another, the city government is passing more ordinances that are affecting residents and local businesses, and now we are seeing an alarming number of foreclosures in our community as is happening all over the country. As I look around, Columbia Heights is becoming less inviting for families to call home. I am running for city council so I can work to keep Columbia Heights ‘home’ for all of us.
As your city council member, I am committed to reducing the role of government in all of our lives. I believe that we need more city ordinances passed with a sunset clause attached to them. This is especially important when there is a tax or fee involved. This will force the city council to review an ordinance for its continued value to our community. Having a sunset clause on ordinances is like having term limits on an ordinance.
One of the reasons my family and I chose Columbia Heights as our home was the sense of community that we found in Columbia Heights. As your city council member, I am committed to being an active member of the council by representing our community. I have been on the Planning and Zoning Commission for 8 years representing the needs of the people who live here in Columbia Heights. I have been an active participant in city issues including being an opponent of the Residential Inspection Before Sale (RIBS) ordinance that was recently voted down at the July city council meeting. I will actively work hard every day to continue making Columbia Heights a safe place for our families and a place in which local businesses can continue to grow.
As your city council member, I will encourage our city government to work hand in hand with community outreach organizations to help solve the issues that face our community. I have often learned that the community, and not local government, can come up with the some of the best solutions for problems we face together. We have seen great success when the community and the city work together.
National Night Out is a great example of the residents and local outreach programs coming together to solve problems facing our community. SACA is another fine example of neighbors helping neighbors. Many of our local churches offer needy families assistance in many areas, food and clothing to even rent assistance. I would like to expand the role of the community in solving the issues facing the city instead of the city council trying to solve all the community’s issues. As a community we need to take ownership of our neighborhoods and be responsible for helping to fix problems not be a part of the problem.
There are too many times that the city has taken a cookie cutter approach to fixing things within our city. They see what is happening in other cities and try and apply that to ours. That doesn’t always work. It takes time to think, discuss and imagine new solutions that will fit our city and I fear we have lost some of that at our leadership level.
I ask that when you go to vote on Election Day, September 9th that you vote for me Donna Schmitt, as your next city council member. Your vote will help to keep Columbia Heights feeling like home to all of our residents and businesses that call Columbia Heights home.

I need some help passing out brochures on Saturday morning. All I ask is for a 1/2 or 1 hour. I am looking at 10:00 am. (Cancel if it looks like rain.) Meet at Oak Hill Baptist Church -4141 University Ave NE Columbia Heights, NW upper parking lot (lot faces 4th St) at 10. I need to pass out brochures in the area near University. This is my church so they won't mind if we park there to get organized. If I could get just a couple people then I could get a whole precinct done!

Did you read the Northeaster dated 8/13?
Read the August 13 issue of Northeaster-Front page-"Heights backs off housing law" by Gail Olson. Marlaine Szurek is quoted in favor of this. Bobby Williams thought it should have just been tabled. This is not over. I did like St Anthony City Manager Mike Mornson's comment," (St Anthony) concluded that almost every home owner does an inspection anyway. Having an ordinance would be overkill, from a government point of view." Exactly what I said! There was claim that the residents "did not understand the ordinance". I think we understood it very well. The only misunderstandings I came across were the parts they changed in the second reading that had been incorporated in the original ordinance.
I have been asked by Bobby to be a part of a discussion they are going to be having on how to take care of the foreclosure problem. At this point, I could also use some suggestions. There is definately a problem with foreclosed properties but I still do not believe the RIBS program was going to be the answer for everything that we were being promised.

Assuming the next president lives to age 80. Sen. McCain would receive ZERO pension as he would reach 80 at the end of two terms as president.
Sen. Obama would be retired for 26 years after two terms and would receive $4,973,800 in pension.
Therefore it would certainly make economic sense to elect McCain in November.
How's that for non partisan thinking???

We are not including every items due to the extreme heat experienced in Kuwait, which will damage or liquidate most products such as soft candy, etc. Therefore, my list includes the most logical products that we have found acceptable in most cases:
The single most important for all military are the "Telephone Calling Cards". We can never have enough and always seem to be running out!.
Comfort Items:
Hard candies, (pre wrapped) or sealed
Wash cloths, soap( all types-hard and liquid-if sealed to prevent leakage)
Toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouth wash
Various types of shampoos, conditioner
Various assortments of body washes and lotions for females
Combs and brushes of various types.
Different levels of Sun screen lotions.
Wet wipes, anti-bacterial moist wipes
Various types of anti-perspirant & Deodorants for both male & Females
Q-tips, Razors and shaving creams for Male & Females.
Reading materials such as "soft back books" and Puzzles.
I would ask you to send packages directly to the Red Cross address below and Calling Cards to me, to ensure equitable distribution around the various Camps.

Just wanted to give everyone an update on how things are going here in Kuwait.
Today marks my third week and my first day off, so far. I am keeping very busy, but really enjoying my many jobs. Each day I am finding it more and more incredible that a job like this exists in today’s bureaucratic military and government. It seems that I have an incredible amount of responsibility but have an equally incredible amount of authority and resources both money and staffing support. Much of the staffing is contractor provided, but that is fine as long as they want to work and do a good job.
I did not realize until I got here and got into the jobs that my responsibilities encompass the entire country of Kuwait. I am assigned to Area Support Group – Kuwait (ASG-KU) which is the permanent US infrastructure which facilitates all the temporary OIF (Operation Iraqi Freedom and OEF (Operation Enduring Freedom) manpower and materiel movement.
As the DIS (Director of Installation Support) for ASG - KU, I have supervision of all Morale Welfare and recreation activities like libraries, gyms, pools, community centers, Red Cross, Education Centers, and PX (AAFES) on all the installations in Kuwait.
I am also the DPW (Director of Public Works) for all the military installation in Kuwait. All the northern camps are under supervision of the Deputy at Camp Buehring and all the camps in the south are supervised by the Deputy out of Camp Arifjan. I have signed over $800,000 in contracts for air conditioning equipment, service contracts and various electrical and maintenance equipment, just in the past 2 weeks.
Don't worry, I am trying to spend your money wisely.
If it wasn't so darn hot, I could really get into this. The temperature is in the mid 120's most of the day and hits 130 occasionally. It will stay that way until about mid September.
I am the Fire Marshall also, by virtue of being the DPW. Fortunately there are regular Fire Departments with a Chief at each station who is responsible for Fire Protection. The Fire Prevention folks work in concert with the Fire Chief and DPW. I am just the Green Suiter (Army) guy that gets pinged when there is a problem, like everytime a Dumpster catches on fire.
I am also the Director of Housing, which is a function of DPW as well, but really takes up about 50% of my time because we have many different types of quarters and many different types of orders and durations of assignments here. Generally the longer you will be here the better your housing. But that creates all kind of inquiries and animosity, an consequently a lot of phone calls to me.
We are short handed in all areas, but the people here both Military and civilian all see to want to be here and want very much to do the BEST they can. It is very inspiring to work with such a great group of people.
I feel very fortunate to be in a position to make a difference in the Quality of Life of our young men and women in the Military, who are assigned to or just pass through Kuwait.
It is an incredible challenge, but I believe I am prepared for it.
