Who Is America's Third Largest Employer?

Citizens Against Government Waste

I know you will be shocked, as I was, to find out who is now the third largest employer in the United States:  the federal government’s massive regulatory bureaucracy!

More federal bureaucrats write regulations to control large and small American businesses, help Big Labor, and meddle in our personal lives than work for McDonald’s, Ford, Disney, and Boeing combined.

In terms of revenue, the federal regulatory behemoth’s $54 billion per year budget would also make it one of the largest companies in America.

This regulatory overkill is both an outrage and a massive waste of our tax dollars.  In addition, it is a major reason why our economy continues to limp along and nearly 13 million hardworking Americans remain unemployed.

That is why I urge you today to join CAGW’s Campaign to End the Overregulation of America.

Weston, the legions of federal regulators are, on a daily basis, literally choking the life out of the American economy, and as a result, millions of Americans have lost their jobs; many have lost their homes; and businesses have gone bankrupt. . .

. . .but while everyone else suffers, the regulators of the Obama Administration thrive.  In fact, employment at the federal regulatory agencies has climbed 13 percent since President Obama took the Oath of Office and will total nearly 300,000 this year.

According to an analysis by Senator John Barasso (R-Wyo.), federal regulators imposed a total of 379 new rules that will cost more than $9.5 billion in July, 2011 alone.  That’s a whopping $25 million per regulation!

And there’s even more to come:  The Obama Administration is proposing 219 new regulations, each of which will have an economic impact of more than $100 million.  The most expensive seven regulations will have a combined impact of more than $100 billion.

A recent Small Business Administration (SBA) study determined that the cost of complying with federal rules and regulations exceeded a mind-numbing $1.75 trillion in 2008, which is a hidden tax on you and me and every American.

According to the same SBA study, the Obama Administration’s regulations often hurt small employers the most.  Complying with federal regulations costs a company with more than 500 workers $7,755 per employee and costs a small business with fewer than 20 workers $10,585 per employee.

Weston, we must fight to stop the Obama Administration’s hyperactive regulators before they further damage our economy and rob us of our personal freedoms!

That is why I urge you in the strongest terms possible to make a contribution today to support CAGW’s Campaign to End the Overregulation of America.

With your contribution, we will work to shine a white-hot spotlight in the media on the worst and most damaging regulations, which are both wasting taxpayer dollars on an unneeded, bloated federal bureaucracy and doing real harm to our economy.

In addition, your contribution will help CAGW make overregulation a top issue in the national debate in this election year and generate a nationwide outcry against the runaway growth of regulations under the Obama Administration.

Weston, as you think about how much to contribute to this campaign, let me remind you that it’s not just businesses that are the target of President Obama’s regulators.

Americans are being forced to purchase new “energy-saving” appliances, whose higher cost exceeds any potential savings.  Incandescent light bulbs are being phased out in favor of “energy-efficient” compact fluorescent bulbs that not only are more expensive, but require special disposal because they contain mercury.  The Department of Energy is attempting to redefine “showerhead” in a way that would eliminate hand-held showers, body spray showers, and similar systems.  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) even attempted to restrict the amount of “dust” permitted on farms!

It’s absolutely imperative that we do everything in our power to send a resounding message to Washington that a vast majority of Americans oppose the regulations that are choking off our economic growth and eroding our personal freedoms.

I urge you, before you do anything else today, make your largest possible contribution of $10.00, $15.00, $25.00, or $35.00 to help us demand an end to heavy-handed government control over our economy and our lives.

Sincerely,
schatz_signature_gif
Thomas A. Schatz, President

P.S.  Weston, let me give you some further insight into the bureaucratic mindset we are combating.  According to the EPA, “In periods of high unemployment, an increase in labor demand due to regulation may have a stimulative effect that results in a net increase in overall employment.”  This is patently absurd!  When a business must hire an employee to do nothing but fill out government forms and paperwork, that employee builds nothing, creates nothing, and sells nothing.  Rather, the employee siphons off resources that the business could use to hire workers who will make and sell goods and services that consumers will purchase, which would in turn result in growth, prosperity, and more employment.  Our government officials are economically illiterate.  Please support CAGW’s Campaign to End the Overregulation of America today with your most generous contribution of $10.00, $15.00, $25.00, or $35.00.
