The reason why jihad is prescribed
Why do Muslims wage jihad?.

Praise be to Allaah. 

Allaah has enjoined jihad for His sake upon the Muslims, for the great benefits that result from that and because of the harm caused by abandoning jihad, some of which are mentioned in Question no. 34830.

Some of the reasons why jihad for the sake of Allah is prescribed in Islam are as follows:

1 – The main goal of jihad is to make the people worship Allaah alone and to bring them forth from servitude to people to servitude to the Lord of people. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and worshiping of others along with Allah) and (all and every kind of) worship is for Allah (Alone). But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zaalimoon (the polytheists, and wrong-doers)”

[al-Baqarah 2:193]

“And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism, i.e. worshiping others besides Allah), and the religion (worship) will all be for Allaah Alone [in the whole of the world]. But if they cease (worshiping others besides Allaah), then certainly, Allaah is All-Seer of what they do”

[al-Anfaal 8:39]

Ibn Jareer said: 

So fight them until there is no more shirk, and none is worshipped except Allaah alone with no partner or associate, and trials and calamities, which are disbelief and polytheism, are lifted from the slaves of Allaah on earth, and religion is all for Allaah alone, and so that obedience and worship will be devoted to Him alone and none else.

Ibn Katheer said: Allaah commands us to fight the kuffaar so that there will be no fitnah, i.e., shirk, and the religion will all be for Allaah alone, i.e., the religion of Allaah will prevail over all other religions.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “"I have been commanded (by Allaah) to fight the people until they testify that there is no god but Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah, and they establish regular prayer and pay zakaah, then if they do that, then they save their lives and property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning will be with Allaah." Narrated by al-Bukhaari (24), Muslim (33).

And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I have been sent just before the Hour with the sword, so that Allaah will be worshipped alone with no partner or associate.”

Narrated by Ahmad, 4869; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 2831.

This purpose of jihad was present in the minds of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) during their battles with the enemies of Allaah. Al-Bukhaari (2925) narrated that Jubayr ibn Hayyah said: ‘Umar sent people to all the regions to fight the mushrikeen… so ‘Umar recruited us and appointed al-Nu’maan ibn Muqarrin to lead us. When we were in the land of the enemy, the representative of Chosroes came out to us with forty thousand troops. An interpreter stood up and said: “Let one of you speak to me.” Al-Mugheerah said: “Ask whatever you want.” He asked, “Who are you?” He (al-Mugheerah) said: “We are some people from among the Arabs. We used to lead a harsh and miserable life, sucking on animal skins and date stones because of hunger, wearing clothes made of camel and goat hair, worshiping trees and rocks. While we were in this state, the Lord of the heavens and the earth, exalted be His name and glorified be His greatness, sent to us a Prophet from amongst ourselves, whose father and mother we know. Our Prophet, the Messenger of our Lord, (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), commanded us to fight you until you worship Allaah alone or pay the jizyah. Our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us the message from our Lord, that whoever among us is killed will go to Paradise to enjoy delights such as no one has ever seen, and whoever among us is left will become your master.”

This is the truth that the Sahaabah and leaders of the Muslims proclaimed in their military campaigns.

Rab’i ibn ‘Aamir said, when Rustam the commander of the Persian armies asked him, “Why have you come?”: “Allaah has sent us to bring forth whomsoever He wills from the worship of man to the worship of Allaah. 

When ‘Uqbah ibn Naafi’ reached Tangiers, he rode his horse into the water until the water was up to its chest, then he said: “O Allaah, bear witness that I have done my utmost, and were it not for this sea I would have travelled throughout the land fighting those who disbelieve in You, until none is worshipped except You.”

2 – Repelling the aggression of those who attack the Muslims.

The scholars are unanimously agreed that repelling the aggression of those who attack the Muslims is fard ‘ayn (an individual obligation) upon those who are able to do that.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And fight in the way of Allaah those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allaah likes not the transgressors”

[al-Baqarah 2:190]

“Will you not fight a people who have violated their oaths (pagans of Makkah) and intended to expel the Messenger while they did attack you first? Do you fear them? Allaah has more right that you should fear Him if you are believers”

[al-Tawbah 9:13]

3 – Removing fitnah (tribulation)

Fitnah is of different types:

(i)                That which is caused by the kuffaar who persecute the Muslims or apply pressure to them to make them give up their religion. Allaah has commanded the Muslims to fight in jihad in order to save those who are weak and oppressed. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And what is wrong with you that you fight not in the Cause of Allaah, and for those weak, ill-treated and oppressed among men, women, and children, whose cry is: “Our Lord! Rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from You one who will protect, and raise for us from You one who will help”

[al-Nisa’ 4:75]

(ii)              The fitnah of the kuffaar themselves and their preventing others from hearing and accepting the truth. That is because the kaafir systems corrupt the innate nature and reason of people, and make them get used to worshiping and submitting to things other than Allaah, getting addicted to alcohol, wallowing in the mire of sexual license, and losing all characteristics of virtue. Whoever is like that can rarely tell truth from falsehood, good from evil, right from wrong. So jihad is prescribed in order to remove those obstacles that prevent people from hearing and accepting the truth and getting to know it.

4 – Protecting the Islamic state from the evil of the kuffaar.

Hence the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) ordered that the leaders of the kuffaar be killed, those who incited the enemies against the Muslims, such as the Jews Ka’b ibn al-Ashraf and Ibn Abi’l-Haqeeq.

Another aspect of jihad is to protect the borders against the kuffaar. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged that as he said: “Guarding the border for one day for the sake of Allaah is better than this world and everything in it.” Al-Bukhaari, 2678.

5 – Frightening the kuffaar, humiliating them and putting them to shame.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Fight against them so that Allaah will punish them by your hands and disgrace them and give you victory over them and heal the breasts of a believing people,

 And remove the anger of their (believers’) hearts. Allaah accepts the repentance of whom He wills. Allaah is All-Knowing, All-Wise”

[al-Tawbah 9:14-15]

“And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war (tanks, planes, missiles, artillery) to threaten the enemy of Allaah and your enemy”
[al-Anfaal 8:60]

Hence it is prescribed to fight in a manner that will strike terror into the heart of the enemy.

Shaykh al-Islam [Ibn Taymiyah – may Allaah have mercy on him] was asked whether it is permissible for a soldier to wear silk or gold or silver when fighting or when the envoys of the enemy come to the Muslims.

He replied:

Praise be to Allaah. With regard to wearing silk in order to frighten the enemy, there are two scholarly views, the more correct of which is that it is allowed. The soldiers of Syria wrote to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab saying: “When we met the enemy we saw that they had covered their weapons with silk and we found that this struck terror in our hearts.” ‘Umar wrote back to them saying: “You should cover your weapons as they do.” And wearing silk is a kind of showing off, and Allaah likes showing off at the time of fighting, as it is narrated in al-Sunan that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is a kind of showing off that Allaah likes, and a kind of showing off that Allaah hates. The showing off that Allaah likes is when a man shows off at the time of war. The kind of showing off that Allaah hates is showing off for the purpose of pride and boasting.” On the day of Uhud, Abu Dujaanah al-Ansaari showed off among the ranks, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “This is a kind of walking that Allaah hates except in this situation.” Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 28/17

6 – Exposing the hypocrites

Allaah says (Interpretation of the meaning):

“But when a decisive Soorah (explaining and ordering things) is sent down, and fighting (Jihaad — holy fighting in Allaah’s Cause) is mentioned (i.e. ordained) therein, you will see those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) looking at you with a look of one fainting to death”

[Muhammad 47:20]

At times of ease and plenty, the Muslims may be joined by those who seek to make worldly gains, and they do not want to make the word of Allaah prevail over the word of kufr. These people may conceal their real nature from many of the Muslims, and the most effective means of exposing them is jihad, because jihad means sacrificing oneself but these hypocrites are only indulging in hypocrisy in order to save themselves. 

Exposing the hypocrites was one of the major purposes that Allaah wanted the believers to achieve on the day of Uhud.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Allaah will not leave the believers in the state in which you are now, until He distinguishes the wicked from the good”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:179]

Ibn al-Qayyim said: 

This means: Allaah will not leave you in the state in which you are, where the believers are indistinguishable from the hypocrites, until the believers are made distinct from the hypocrites, as they were distinguished by the test on the day of Uhud, and Allaah will not disclose to you the unseen matters by which the one group is distinguished from the other, for they are distinguished from one another in the knowledge of the unseen that He has, but He wants to distinguish them from one another in a clear and visible manner, so that His unseen knowledge will become known and visible.

7 – Purifying the believers of their sins and ridding them thereof

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And so are the days (good and not so good), that We give to men by turns, that Allaah may test those who believe, and that He may take martyrs from among you. And Allaah likes not the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers).

 And that Allaah may test (or purify) the believers (from sins) and destroy the disbelievers.

Do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allaah tests those of you who fought (in His Cause) and (also) tests those who are As-Saabiroon (the patient)?”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:140-142]

8 – Acquiring booty

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I have been sent ahead of the Hour with the sword so that Allaah will be worshipped alone, and my provision has been placed in the shade of my spear, and humiliation has been decreed for those who go against my command, and whoever imitates a people is one of them.”  Narrated by Ahmad, 4869; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 2831.

Al-Haafiz said:

This hadeeth indicates that war booty is permissible for this ummah, and that the provision of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has been placed in war booty and not in other kinds of earnings. Hence some of the scholars said that it is the best kind of earnings.

Al-Qurtubi said:

Allaah sent provision to His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) by means of his striving and He made it by means of the best kind of striving which is earning it by means of force and strength.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went out for the battle of Badr to meet the caravan of Abu Sufyaan.

Al-Qurtubi said: The fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went out to meet the caravan indicates that it is permissible to take booty because it is a halaal source of income. This refutes Maalik’s view that this is makrooh, when he said that this was fighting for worldly gains. 

Al-Shawkaani said: Ibn Abi Jamrah said: The scholars of hadeeth are of the view that if the primary motive is to make the word of Allaah supreme, it does not matter what else is also achieved.

9 – Taking martyrs.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“If a wound (and killing) has touched you, be sure a similar wound (and killing) has touched the others. And so are the days (good and not so good), that We give to men by turns, that Allaah may test those who believe, and that He may take martyrs from among you. And Allaah likes not the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers).

 And that Allaah may test (or purify) the believers (from sins) and destroy the disbelievers”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:140-141]

Martyrdom is one of the highest statuses before Allaah, and the martyrs are the closest of His slaves to Him. There is no status higher than that of siddeeq apart from martyrdom. Allaah loves to take martyrs from among His slaves, who shed their blood for His love and to earn His pleasure, preferring His pleasure and His love above themselves. There is no way to attain this status except by circumstances that may lead to it such as enemies coming against the Muslims. 

This was said by Ibn al-Qayyim in Zaad al-Ma’aad.

This is the great wisdom and  those who try to put the Muslims off jihad and make them fear it, and say that jihad is no more than death, and making women widows and children orphans, pale into insignificance.

10 – Ridding the world of corruption.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“For had it not been that Allaah checks one set of people by means of another, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, wherein the Name of Allaah is mentioned much would surely, have been pulled down. Verily, Allaah will help those who help His (Cause). Truly, Allaah is All-Strong, All-Mighty”

[al-Hajj 22:40]

“And if Allaah did not check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief. But Allaah is full of bounty to the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists)”

[al-Baqarah 2:251]

Muqaatil said:

Were it not that Allaah checked the mushriks by means of the Muslims, the mushriks would have overrun the earth and killed the Muslims and destroyed the mosques.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said in al-Jawaab al-Saheeh, 2/216:

So the kuffar are repelled by means of the Muslims and the worse of the two parties is repelled by the better, just as the Magians (Persians) were repelled by the Christian Byzantines, then the Christians were repelled by the believers of the ummah of Muhammad.

Al-Sa’di said: The world would be corrupted if the kuffaar and evildoers were to prevail.

These are some of the reasons why jihad is prescribed.
We ask Allaah to bring the Muslims back to their religion. May Allaah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad.

Social Harmony, A Lady

I was reading an article the other day, in the local newspaper, about an elderly Korean gentleman who has moved into town and opened a martial arts studio. He chastened the reporter who had come to interview him not to suggest that the martial arts were 'all about fighting.' "No!" he said. "The purpose is social harmony."

That is exactly right. The secret of social harmony is simple: Old men must be dangerous.

Very nearly all the violence that plagues, rather than protects, society is the work of young males between the ages of fourteen and thirty. A substantial amount of the violence that protects rather than plagues society is performed by other members of the same group. The reasons for this predisposition are generally rooted in biology, which is to say that they are not going anywhere, in spite of the current fashion that suggests doping half the young with Ritalin.

The question is how to move these young men from the first group (violent and predatory) into the second (violent, but protective). This is to ask: what is the difference between a street gang and the Marine Corps, or a thug and a policeman? In every case, we see that the good youths are guided and disciplined by old men. This is half the answer to the problem.

But do we not try to discipline and guide the others? If we catch them at their menace, don't we put them into prisons or programs where they are monitored, disciplined, and exposed to "rehabilitation"? The rates of recidivism are such that we can't say that these programs are successful at all, unless the person being "rehabilitated" wants and chooses to be. And this is the other half of the answer: the discipline and guidance must be voluntarily accepted. The Marine enlists; the criminal must likewise choose to accept what is offered.

The Eastern martial arts provide an experience very much like that of Boot Camp. The Master, like the Drill Instructor, is a disciplined man of great personal prowess. He is an exemplar. He asks nothing of you he can't, or won't, do himself--and there are very many things he can and will do that are beyond you, though you have all the help of youth and strength. It is on this ground that acceptance of discipline is won. It is the ground of admiration, and what wins the admiration of these young men is martial prowess.

Everyone who was once a young man will understand what I mean. Who could look forward, at the age of sixteen or eighteen, to a life of obedience, dressed in suits or uniforms, sitting or standing behind a desk? How were you to respect or care about the laws, or the wishes, of men who had accepted such a life? The difficulty is compounded in poor communities, where the jobs undertaken are often menial. How can you respect your father if your father is a servant? Would you not be accepting a place twice as low as his? Would you not rather take up the sword, and cut yourself a new place? Meekness in the old men of the community unmakes the social order: it encourages rebellion from the young.

The traditional martial arts tend to teach young men to undertake flashy and impressive, but not terribly effective, fighting techniques. Only as you grow older do the masters of the art teach you the real secrets--the subtle, quick, physically simple ways in which the human body can be destroyed. In this way, the old retain their power over the young--although they lack the speed and strength, they have in discipline in training more than enough to maintain the order. Social harmony is maintained in the dojo: the young revere the old, and seek to emulate them. Your father may be a servant, but he is still a warrior--and a more dangerous one than you. The father, being past that age in which biology makes us vicious, guides the son or neighbor to protect society rather than to rend it. It is not particularly different in the military.

If we would have a stable society, we must have dangerous old men. This means that, if you are yourself on your way to becoming an old man, you have a duty to society to begin your preparations. The martial arts are not the only road--my own grandfather did it through a simple combination of physical strength, personal discipline, and an accustomed habit of going armed about his business. There was never a more impressive figure--or, at least, there was never a boy more impressed than was I.

The martial virtues are exactly the ones needed. By a happy coincidence, having a society whose members adhere to and encourage those virtues makes us freer as well--we need fewer police, fewer courts, fewer prisons, fewer laws, and fewer lawyers. This is what Aristotle meant when he said that the virtues of the man are reflected in the society. Politics and ethics are naturally joined.

A Lady Named Irena Sendler




There recently was the death of a 98-year-old lady named Irena Sendler.
During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the   Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.

She had an ulterior motive...

She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews, (being German).

Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of her tool box she carried, and she also carried in the back of her truck a Burlap sack, (for larger kids).

She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.

The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time and course of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.

She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs and arms and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids sh e smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.

After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it, and reunited the family.

Most, of course, had been gassed.

Those kids she helped were placed into foster family homes or adopted.

Last year Irena was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize....

She LOST!

Walt Disney had a dream and drew MULTITUDES of flowers for a long time.  He was rejected as a journalist and he was NOT given immediate acclaim by any means BY ANYONE!  A Disney critic said flowers don't have faces.  Walt eventually drew an animated mouse scampering across a cartoon page--with an expressive face--and we've been paying hard earned cash to a 'rodent' based industry ever since.  Faces get our attention and our cash!  Do your dreams have faces in them?
 
Let's remember the face we each put on the Republican Party, and be willing to continue  establishing our base here in 50A.  Look into the faces of the citizens here and give them a hand--serve here, from the bottom if we can't be elected to a top office at this time.  Nothing and no one will stop us from serving each other right here, right now.

If we can't make a name for ourselves let's be able to know the names of our neighbors  right here, and listen to the dreams in the hearts of our neighbors---and look out for their God-given LIVES, right NOW.  Yes, our U.S. Constitution is important--but so is our neighbor whose face expresses Constitutional rights to a LIFE LIVED BY CITIZEN CHOICE.  Right now the citizens have chosen life DFL style.  Let's not stop serving the neighbors in little ways that speak volumes.  Be the 'mouse in the house'...make smiles happen and people will pay attention to our agenda of service to others.

Praise God that a dream is worth resurrecting--and sometimes it takes awhile.  Sometimes failure seems to predominate until a mouse with a face ignites the imagination of a world audience.  Who is our local audience and how do we engage this audience? What can we do to bring more life to our 'audience' here in HD50A?  Will it take laughter?  Advocacy?   Relationships?  Healers?  Helpers?  Enemies--who assault us and our dream?

We can stand for what's right and good and we can help others become winners--we must urge others to dream little and dream big.  We can focus on our neighbor's dreams--for these dreams are as important as ours and often the same as ours.

 Dreams are not detrimental to the health of our house district.  Ideals become ideas.  We make lists of our ideals and ideas--but do these IDEAS HAVE  FACES?  Let's put our neighbors faces into our ideals and ideas....because JESUS DID THAT.  This is one nation under God.  God carved our faces on His hands and gave HIS LIFE.  Dreams will cost us, and they will be resurrected when they have faces on them...not just our own face.

It's time to evaluate our local focus for service to others with the help of Ted and Adam, Donna and Rich, Tim and Nadine, along with the other CD5 campaigners--like Barb Davis White in her hard fought campaign for Congress in the 5th.  Let's look at Michelle Bachman's campaign as well, and be willing to come forward to assist in the vote re-count for Norm--now we have time not being taken by three active campaigns.

  WE in 50A ARE NOT ALONE IN HAVING A TOUGH TIME OF IT.   IN THIS PART OF TOWN  WE could BEGIN TO THINK NONE OF US ARE ELECTABLE.  Not true.  One  of us was elected.  Was it the piles of money that Ted had? Was it Adam's experience with running races?!  Was it a better education?  Was it the fact he'd been on the board before?  What does it take to get elected----or stay UNSELECTED?  We may think we've had too much experience with the latter!!!

 It does take courage to even  start to 'RACE' here!  We can dare to share what didn't work, and what ALMOST worked--and what worked.  Let's believe in these human beings who vote, and look at them as individuals WITH FACES, and continue to believe they could choose to vote for another one or two or three of US next time.

"WE THE PEOPLE OF THESE UNITED STATES...."  can just be the people and let our neighborhood know that the REPUBLICAN PARTY HERE is the party that is eager and willing to help, to serve and seize every day....and let's seize EVERY DAY BETWEEN ELECTIONS to show what Republicans can do with our neighbors.

Is it wrong to disagree about issues--see things differently?  No.  This is our human right in America--and it is our right to assemble and agree on some issues as well!!!. We do debate and win some and lose some debates. But stop--is it right to call each other names?  I will state here that when and if anyone is being vulgar--using profanity against any other person I will adamantly say STOP--and I will ask that any one on our executive committee or in our full committee also say STOP when this sort of demeaning behavior occurs---promptly. This mindlessness against any of us hurts all of us.

While the GOP may seem to choose to over analyze at times and think things over and over and over until we get analysis paralysis--still, we are not the party of profanity and vulgarity. We are willing to serve others with whom we disagree. For this I am thankful.

 We have seen how President Bush has been treated over the past 8 years.  I was pleased to hear one of our Republican leaders say they would not be part of reciprocating and treating Pres Elect Obama that way--instead we Republicans can show a better way, and take the lead in discussing the deeper issues, bringing out disagreements yes along with  solutions--not settling for smoke and mirrors.

 I am one of the people here in 50A--and I have dreams, too, dreams that have your face on them.  I have one vote, but I have chosen to expand my influence beyond the voting booth and to invest time in my own neighborhood ad a member of the Republican Party, because we are still the party with answers and solutions that express smaller government of the people.  How do we bring these answers and solutions to the people right beside us? I think they will eventually vote for us when voting for us is voting for THEIR DREAMS.
We must put our neighbors faces into our dreams for today and tomorrow.

  I will defend our Party even though I may disagree with the way Republican values are being expressed or forgotten by individuals within and outside the party.

I will not dump our dreams of bringing "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness..." to our population right here in HD50A. WE  JUST HAVE TO DO THIS BETTER--- face to face.

GOD GIVES DREAMS....I have a dream of electing more excellent Republican candidates right here--but the dream won't scamper across the ballots until we have our citizen's faces etched into our own dreams.

After evaluating the effects of our hard work and our campaigns, we need to realize the poorest person among us is the one with no personal dreams and no vision--who denigrates others and becomes the local representative for bully tactics, repeatedly.  Some union leaders have been noted for this.  THESE TACTICS ARE NOT EFFECTIVE REPUBLICAN TOOLS.

 Helen Keller was asked what could be worse than being born deaf and sightless.  Ms Keller said, "There is a worse place to be in--being sighted and having NO VISION.

Dreams and vision bring hope and reform.   Now dare to think and get beyond the "I thought it..." stage.   There are more stages of making dreams come true like...."I sought it....I caught it....I bought into it..."   The latter stage is the struggle stage-- researching, paying the price!  Then NEXT COMES THE "I GOT IT..." STAGE! 

 Some dreams nearly die after each election...look for a spark of life in your dreams of bringing reform to our area--and don't forget to look into faces who may not yet dare to dream enough to acknowledge the God-given value in every citizen's life.  Start living for the faces in our dreams...our citizen's faces.

There was a recent report on Hubert Humphrey...it was 1935...in Washington, DC.  He wrote to his wife that he had a dream of living in Washington DC some day. And we now know he became Senator and Vice President....but the dream began with him sitting in a hotel room in Washington DC, writing home to his wife as he was looking out at the monuments that meant service to our country.  He often remembered the cost of serving others--the toll it had taken on the lives of others to live this life of service.  Everytime I took my Mom's wheelchair up a curbside that had a wheelchair mini-ramp I would think of Hubert's idea for wheel chair access on every little corner of the USA. He started something.   Later on, as Hubert was found to have cancer and was considered terminal, a reporter stopped him at the airport and asked him about his plans.  Hubert responded, "I might just start something...."

    The 5th CD’s next Full Committee meeting will be Tuesday, December 9th, 7:00 at Kenwood Park in Minneapolis . The agenda will include discussion of revenue and expenditures at the end of the campaign, a discussion of the campaign itself, and presumably an update on the U.S. Senate recount.

    

    We will also have a preliminary discussion on the rights and wrongs of 5th CD 2008 campaign activities (we will have a more in depth discussion of this at our January planning session (normally done the last Saturday of January—location T.B.D.).

Barack Obama in the White House;
many pro-gunners out of Congress

Based on his voting record in the Illinois state senate and in the U.S. Senate, President-elect Barack Obama will be the most anti-Second Amendment president in the history of America.

In January, the new President will govern alongside congressional leadership, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who are also extremely hostile to gun rights and who now enjoy greatly expanded majorities.

There can be little doubt about the direction in which gun rights are headed. The questions are how far will the anti-gunners go and how fast will they move?

Many comparisons have been made to the first two years of the first Clinton Administration, in which one party controlled both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Almost all experts agree that it was Clinton's overreaching on issues like gun control that cost his party control of Congress. Barack Obama will start out governing with even larger majorities than did Clinton.

Obama ran a campaign high on rhetoric and short on specifics. The President-elect claims he will govern from the middle, but the question for gun owners is which Obama will show up at the White House -- the "centrist" from the campaign trail, or the radical anti-Second Amendment extremist who supports gun bans, waiting periods for firearm purchases, one gun a month restrictions, and more?

His party's large gains in the Congress give the incoming President more room to maneuver with a radical agenda.

An equally important question is the outlook for gun rights in the new Congress. That Obama will sign any anti-gun bill that gets to his desk is a certainty. But what can gun owners expect from the new Congress?

Hopes of Congressional restraint on gun issues dimmed with each election return as Pelosi's and Reid's majorities grew to historic proportions.

While there are many moderately pro-gun Democrats in Congress, they're not the ones calling the shots. The leadership is completely in the anti-gun camp, so expanding their majority would have a negative impact on gun rights regardless of who filled those seats.

Unfortunately, though, many seats that flipped parties also went from strong pro-gun to strong anti-gun. Gun owners suffered heavy losses in the Senate. Here's a look at five Senate seats that switched parties (all switches went from Republican to Democrat).

Colorado -- The retirement of A-rated Senator Wayne Allard set up a battle between anti-gun Rep. Mark Udall and pro-gun former Rep. Bob Schaffer. This is one of three senate seats that flipped from "A" to "F."

New Hampshire -- Pro-gun Senator John Sununu was defeated by F-rated former governor Jeanne Shaheen, another "A" to "F" shift.

New Mexico -- Long-time Senator Pete Domenici, who was D-rated and usually voted against gun owners, was replaced by F-rated Congressman Tom Udall. Udall defeated A-rated Representative Steve Pearce, making this a big loss for gun owners.

North Carolina -- Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole ran as a pro-gun control candidate for president in 2000. Since being elected to the Senate from the Tar Heel state, however, Mrs. Dole compiled a good pro-gun record. Dole's defeat at the hands of F-rated anti-gunner Kay Hagan is a dramatic flip for gun rights.

Virginia -- F-rated Republican John Warner retired. Former governor Mark Warner (no relation) trounced "A" rated Jim Gilmore, also a former governor. Either of the candidates would have been an improvement over the retiring Senator, but Mark Warner refused to answer the GOA survey and has a mixed record on gun issues.

In the battle for the U.S. House of Representatives, gun owners also were hit hard.

Of the 18 incumbents who were defeated, 15 were pro-gun (only two were replaced by a pro-gunner). Of particular disappointment to gun owners were the losses of Republican representatives Marilyn Musgrave (CO-4), Tom Feeney (FL-24), Bill Sali (ID-1), and Tim Walberg (MI-7). These representatives were among the most ardent Second Amendment supporters.

In the 32 open House seats, the results were mixed. Thirteen seats went to A-rated candidates, while six went to F-rated anti-gunners. Nine new congressmen are "Not Rated," meaning they have no record and refused to fill out a GOA questionnaire. Four new members fall somewhere in the middle, leaning toward a pro-gun position but no guarantees. Note: a handful of close races across the country are obviously headed for recounts, but this is how things look at the moment.

The A-rated winners in open seat elections are: Tom McClintock (R-CA) (this race is still subject to change), Duncan Hunter (R-CA), Bill Posey (R-FL), Mike Coffman (R-CO), Debbie Halvorson (D-IL), Aaron Schock (R-IL), Brett Guthrie (R-KY), Erik Paulsen (R-MN), Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO), Christopher Lee (R-NY), Glenn Thompson (R-PA), Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), and Cynthia Lummis (R-WY). These representatives will have their work cut out for them, as the new Congress has moved decidedly in the anti-gun direction and many pro-gun leaders were defeated.

All in all, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid can't help but be emboldened by their gains and there can be no denying that gun control legislation is on their agenda.

So what can gun owners and sportsmen do to help prevent a gun control tidal wave? Get involved and stay engaged!

ACTION ALERT ON PELOSI TO STOP WORKSITE ENFORCEMENT RAIDS BY ICE

House Speaker Pelosi has touched off a new round of fighting over whether the Homeland Security Department should continue to stage controversial raids of worksites around the country. That may foreshadow a dispute that could move front and center when the new Congress convenes in January. Pelosi indicated at a news conference Wednesday that she supports an end to worksite enforcement operations nationwide by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is part of the Homeland Security Department. She said the urgency of putting together comprehensive immigration reform legislation has been intensified by the raids. "How do we end the ICE raids, have a situation where we can end the ICE raids as we put together the comprehensive immigration reform?" she asked.

The only worksite raids that have taken place in the past year and a half are because they involved American identity theft. These are not just random worksites; they are sites where the Department of Justice knows American identity theft is taking place.

 A Pelosi spokesman said the speaker has long expressed concerns that the Raids are ineffective and "unnecessarily divide families at the expense of children."

 Well if that is the underlying reason;  Congress should not send soldiers off to war in Iraq , Afghanistan , or any area outside the United States because it   "unnecessarily divides families at the expense of children." Congress should place a moratorium on enforcement and punishment on any criminal who has a family because it "unnecessarily divides families at the expense of children."  Let’s not just give this benefit to illegal alien thieves.

 Millions of Americans are out of work in America. Nancy Pelosi should be calling for increased worksite enforcement in America . We need to make sure the few jobs left, are being done by American citizens and legal immigrants.

 Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid should be protecting the tax payer’s jobs so we can continue to bail out Wall Street, Main Street , Auto Row and everyone else they put on the commercial welfare rolls.

 Nancy Pelosi should be doing everything to protect Americans from identity theft, and holding criminals accountable regardless of whether it "unnecessarily divides families at the expense of children."

 This nonsense has gone on long enough! This Congress continues to decide policy that “unnecessarily divides Americans from their jobs and their hard earned dollars”, No more immunity for illegal aliens stealing jobs and identity.

Dear Voters,

A huge and warm thank you for all of the wonderful support for my Columbia Heights school board campaign.  I fervently wish that I had more company in office with Congresswoman Barb -White, State Representative Tim Utz and City Council Member Donna Schmitt.  But we will have to work all the harder to help our friends and neighbors understand that electing our candidates and our values of limited government, strong families, and fiscal responsibility are really what makes our nation, state and district strong and great.  All of our candidates and volunteers did a wonderful job and I am confident that one day our work will be rewarded if we do not give up or lose heart. Many thanks particularly to Tim and Donna and my fantastic campaign manager, Adam Davis.  I couldn't have been elected without their invaluable help.

As good citizens, in order for our system to work well, we all need to keep an eye on developments in our local government and schools and speak up when necessary. We may have lost this battle, but we need to be forever vigilant in defending our freedom. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
 

Please let me know, at any time, your thoughts regarding how to improve Columbia Heights schools, and also what you think is working well.  I need your help with this important office, as good schools benefit everybody and bad schools are a real detriment to our community.

Thank you to everyone that helped with my campaign.  We put up a good effort and fell just a "little" short.  One of the good things is that this year we have seen more people active in the BPOU than have been in many years.  We need to lick our wounds and come back ready for next time.  We need to decide what didn't work and continue with the stuff that worked well.

We also still need to be vigilant in the next few months.  We need to continue to watch the local city council and get ready for Fridley's school board election next year!  We have a very good candidate that is willing to run.  Let's keep supporting our local candidates as well as the national candidates.

We can be very grateful for Ted's outstanding win in the Columbia Heights school board!  Way to go Ted!

For Fair Tax Supporters

Dear FairTax supporters,

There is much to say in this, "the morning after," email so I'll be brief as I share a few thoughts about the FairTax in the days ahead.

FairTax.org is non-partisan, but I know the same cannot be said for many of our supporters. And, as such, I suspect yesterday's results came as a disappointment for some. For me, I look at things through many lenses--as a father, as a taxpayer, as an American, as National Communications Director for FairTax.org. For my FairTax.org role in particular, I see both challenges and incredible opportunities in the days ahead for our great cause.

Let me explain.

In the past year, the FairTax has achieved historical support in Congress mostly via Republican backing in the House and Senate. With yesterday's returns, GOP ranks--including FairTax supporters--were thinned both by retirement decisions and the ballot box, meaning come January we'll be rebuilding our co-sponsorship levels. Yet, that challenge is a welcome one for it affords us the opportunity to remind grassroots supporters, as well as national political figures, that the FairTax is not a Republican issue. Nor is it Democrat. It's an American one and in this, one of our darkest financial hours in decades, it's the solution we need to save the American economy.

So for Republicans or Democrats (or any other political stripe for that matter) with their retirement or college savings plans being decimated by a falling stock market, the FairTax is the solution. For Republicans or Democrats trying to make their mortgage payments and keep a roof over their heads, the FairTax is the solution (after all, most banks don't bother asking your political party when foreclosing). For Republicans or Democrats whose jobs were shipped overseas for cheaper production costs and favorable taxation, the FairTax is the solution. And for a way to jumpstart the American economy with a $10 trillion dollar stimulus program funded with private investments, the FairTax is the solution.

You know, we heard a lot about change this election and we couldn't agree more. Let's us focus on real change: Bringing power back to people, not just powerful Washington insiders. Don't think for a second that "our enemy" is either Democrats or Republicans. Indeed, the tax code is manipulated by both parties in Congress alike with reckless abandon to punish enemies and reward supporters at the hands of well-heeled lobbyists and their privileged access to Congressional tax-writing committees. Ending that practice is the kind of change we seek.

So what happens now?

In short: We press on. We'll be working hard to forge new relationships in Washington, while continuing to grow our base at the grassroots level online and via new offline activities, including our new FairTax Advanced Tactics "camp." State leaders are forging ahead with new strategies to help each other and expand the base outside our centers of strength. We've seen several FairTax "distorters" turned back at the polls. We've made incredible progress in the past year, and we plan to continue that momentum. Our campaign has always been the people of America--of all political beliefs--versus the entrenched interests that surround the income tax system. In this, nothing has changed. We need now to work harder than ever to tell union members how the FairTax will keep jobs here in America, and explain to political leaders how the FairTax can unburden the poor, give small business the needed tax freedom to form and prosper and unlock the genius of American productivity and investment.

Furthermore, FairTax.org leadership is continuing to work to bring in new high-profile advocates, including some key Democrat leadership figures. We're also thrilled to announce a closer relationship with Governor Mike Huckabee, the former GOP presidential candidate and major FairTax supporter. As you know, Huck helped gain national attention for the FairTax during his run for the White House. Look for promotion of the FairTax on his new Fox show "Huckabee," on radio and in print with his new book, Do the Right Thing, in the coming days.

As you can see, the days ahead hold incredible opportunity for the FairTax cause. Let's go!

 Thanks to everyone that came out to help this year to volunteer in any way. The election was difficult, but it looks like your efforts will allow us to retain a Republican Senator from Minnesota (due to the re-count the race—and our work--isn’t quite over yet).

 Due to a late completion of election judge duties I was unable to make the festivities at the Bloomington Sheraton last night (Thanks to Bob Olson, Barry Hickethier, Shirley Carlson and James Turnham for putting the 5th CD Hospitality Room together). There are a lot of individuals I would have liked to thank in person for the extraordinary dedication they showed to our party and our candidates.

 It’s always difficult to see the good when so many of the results are poor, but a lot of good did happen. First, I was extremely impressed with the talent shown by our local candidates (most of them running for the first time). It’s always a challenge to run for office, but especially in a year with so many difficulties for our side. Second, after a slow start we showed that the 5th CD can compete with any other region of the state with respect to volunteer effort. The amount of activity in the 5th CD this last month was amazing.

Finally, there is a long list of people  that put in a massive amount of time throughout the year, and deserve recognition. Many have been helping us for years, and many provided new leadership that we desperately needed. But at this time I’d like to point out three individuals:

 Red Bartholomew (SD 45): Long before Republicans had finally decided to unify behind their candidates Red spent 6 hours at the 5th CD phone bank every Saturday since April making voter I.D. calls, drastically improving the quality our data for the area he called, and making our Get-out-the-vote efforts much more effective.

Nik Ludwig (SD 58): The Minneapolis City Republican Committee had been struggling for several years since its founder (Lyall Schwazkopf) retired. Nik took over as chair of the City Committee this spring. The committee is now stable, has enthusiastic membership, and is able to provide credible support to its endorsed candidates.

 Mary Belfry (SD60): Mary, as part of the East Hennepin McCain organization (Jim Patterson, Chair), created the most dynamic, aggressive and effective Republican volunteer recruitment Minneapolis has had in recent memory. Volunteers were plucked out of neighborhood festivals, Nicollet Mall lunchtime crowds, Vikings games, and even Orchestra Hall. In an era when it’s easy for statewide campaigns to overlook the 5th CD and Minneapolis in particular, Mary has shown how important taking Minneapolis seriously can be to achieving victory.

 Thank you for all of your efforts this year. It was good working with you. We have an awful lot of work to do to get where we want to be, but hopefully we’ve set the groundwork for success in the years to come.

 As most of you know, there will be a statewide recount of the ballots for the U.S. Senate race. We are looking for people to help ensure that the ballots remain unchanged between now and the start of the recount. This involves a person staying at City Hall (or the city’s election center), and literally watching the ballots.

 There are two shifts every day (8:00-12:30 and 12:30 to 5:00) from Friday, 11/7 to Tuesday, 11/18. Note that offices are closed on Tuesday the 11th.

 We need shifts filled for the following cities:

Hopkins

St. Louis Park

Golden Valley

Minneapolis

Robbinsdale

Richfield

Crystal

Citizens of 50-A

 

Tim and Nadine say a grateful thanks to everyone who supported the campaign. So many exciting events occurred which gave us such a great showing in a year of revolting against Republicans. Many folks not being Republicans chose to support our campaign by voting for Tim.

 

Our campaign debt is about equal to the voter support we received of 6800 citizens. We are seeking to retire this debt by your continued support. Donation options are through our web site, by mail or visiting our office. Let your neighbors who support liberty, personal responsibility, and constitutional rule of law know of the need to retire this debt.

 

Our state is in for very tough times in the next few years. Unfortunately, more folks in the district than not chose to continue things as usual.  WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Computers at the headquarters of the Barack Obama and John McCain campaigns were hacked during the campaign by a foreign entity looking for future policy information, a source with knowledge of the incidents confirms to CNN.

The source said the computers were hacked mid-summer by either a foreign government or organization.

Another source, a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation, says federal investigators approached both campaigns with information the U.S. government had about the hacking, and the campaigns then hired private companies to mitigate the problem.

U.S. authorities, according to one of the sources, believe they know who the foreign entity responsible for the hacking is, but refused to identify it in any way, including what country.

The source, confirming the attacks that were first reported by Newsweek, said the sophisticated intrusions appeared aimed at gaining information about the evolution of policy positions in order to gain leverage in future dealings with whomever was elected.

The FBI is investigating, one of the sources confirmed to CNN. The FBI and Secret Service refused comment on the incidents. Video Watch Brian Todd's report on the investigation. »

The sources refused to speak on the record due to the ongoing investigation and also because it is a sensitive matter involving presidential politics.

As described by a Newsweek reporter with special access while working on a post-campaign special, workers in Obama's headquarters first detected what they thought was a computer virus that was trying to obtain users' personal information.

The next day, agents from the FBI and Secret Service came to the office and said, "You have a problem way bigger than what you understand ... you have been compromised, and a serious amount of files have been loaded off your system."

One of the sources told CNN the hacking into the McCain campaign computers occurred around the same time as the breach into those of Obama's campaign.

Representatives of the campaigns could not be reached for comment on the matter.

Mark Alexander, PatriotPost.us: Tuesday, 4 November 2008, is a date which will live in infamy. While most presidential elections are followed with calls for unity by both candidates, Barack Obama issued no such call in his speech last night, with the possible exception of his observation, "I may not have won your vote tonight, but ... I will be your president, too."

Of course, none was expected -- liberals have elected a Socialist with deep ties to cultural and ethnocentric radicalism, and his executive and legislative agenda poses a greater threat to American liberty than that of any president in the history of our great republic.

Obama has twice taken an oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic" and to "bear true faith and allegiance to the same." He has never honored that oath, and, based on his policy proposals and objectives, he has no intention to honor it after again reciting that oath on 20 January 2009. Obama seeks to, in his own words, "break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution."

Today, at least 55,805,197 Americans are concerned for the future of our nation's great tradition of liberty. Some 63,007,791 Americans have been lulled, under the aegis of "hope and change," into a state of what is best described as "cult worship" and all its attendant deception.

One of our editors, a Marine now working in the private sector, summed up our circumstances with this situation report. It aptly captured the sentiments around our office: "It's been tough, fellow Patriots; tough to stomach the idea that more than half of my fellow citizens who vote, have booted a genuine American hero to the curb for a rudderless charlatan. What a sad indictment on our citizenry that some are so eager to overlook his myriad flaws -- his radical roots, his extreme liberalism, his utter lack of experience or achievement. Barack Obama is the antithesis of King's dream: He's a man judged by the color of his skin rather than the content of his character. If it's God's will that Barack Obama is our next president, then so be it. We Patriots will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and wade back to the war front, intent on liberty or death."

This battle is lost, but the war is not. Let's roll. -

We're experiencing the times of our lives.  The next 'election' cycle has already begun.  This is America and we're citizens of a God-blessed country.  Let's count our blessings right now.

A big thank-you to our own candidates:  Barb Davis White; Tim Utz  and spouse [!], Donna Schmitt, Ted Landwehr.  We will always need candidates with enough vision for how things "ought to be" TO RUN!  May only good things come of the committment and courage you showed, and the values you expressed.

Being in the 5th Congressional District has been exciting and rewarding.  We have so much to do that every effort seems to make a good difference--bit by bit we're building it!

I'm looking for people to stand up and be counted.  To begin again.  To have an attitude of gratitude that together we can make things happen for good.

Thank-you to every person who worked, wrote letters, prayed, gave money and time, who organized events and who encouraged one of us or all of us!!!

We did many good things that we must remember to include next time around--along with including even more ideas for electing ourselves to leadership positions in 'our world' of MN politics.

As I sit here looking at the election results -- maps, vote tallies, exit polls, state and national results, and much more -- I have to say that, like many of you, I'm in a state of shock.

Not because I'm surprised, mind you -- I warned you that this would happen if the Republican Party nominated John McCain for president.

Yes, I was right... but believe me, that doesn't make me happy. What it makes me... is angry.

    * Angry at the Democrats, of course. Once again, they ran a campaign full of lies and hate-filled attacks, from Obama's claims that he had "never heard" his racist pastor's anti-American rhetoric over a 20-year period of time, to his claims that his terrorist friend Bill Ayers was "just a guy in the neighborhood," to outright slanderous speech against Governor Sarah Palin... but hey, I expect the Democrats to act that way. It's their nature.
    * Angry at the "moderate" (meaning liberal) Rockefeller-wing of the Republican Party, who tried to kill the idea of grassroots involvement of hardworking, patriotic, conservative Americans in our party. There's NO grassroots activism when the Rockefeller wing's philosophy prevails; that wing of the party consists of "kingmakers" operating from behind the throne, while the Reagan wing of the party has always lived and thrived at the grassroots, where the real Americans live. When the Rockefeller-wing philosophy prevails, the GOP loses. When the Reagan wing is in control, we win.
    * Angry with President Bush because he was unwilling to stop Republican Congressional leaders from overspending and because his administration failed to lay the blame for the financial crisis at the feet of Rep. Barney Frank and Senator Chris Dodd that protected Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from reform.
    * Angry at the so-called "leaders" of our party, who promised us that if we'd just vote for who they put up for election, we'd finally get what we wanted: smaller government, lower taxes, dramatically lower spending, pro-life laws, pro-marriage constitutional amendments, pro-American economics... well, YOU AND I put them in power, and they gave us nothing but BIG GOVERNMENT, BIG DEFICITS, and LIBERAL COMPROMISES.

RIBS Again, Assault on Liberty part 1700 or so,Thank You from Ted/Nadine

Tonight, the city of Columbia Heights is dealing with adding a "RIBS type" inspection program for foreclosed and abandoned homes.  It is ordinance #1559.  This is another fee or "inconvenience" that will be added to the sale of a home.   This should be something that realtors should be watching and making note of because it will delay sales in Columbia Heights.  Part of this means that a purchaser will not be able to move into a home until the house passes a health and safety inspection.

If it passes tonight the second reading is scheduled for the November 24th council meeting.

You can look at this by going to the City of Columbia Heights website - city council agendas.  the inspection check list they are using is almost word-for-word the RIBS inspection.  No fee has been set at this time.  Watch it close because the wording will change from this reading to the next one.  They will use the point that "we (citizens) don't really understand this ordinance (Because they understand these things better than we do)"  "this will improve the property value of the city"  Look for the same comments as the last time.

What happens if someone moves into a nursing home, temporarily?  How long will it take to be considered abandoned?  Can anyone think of a reason the water would be shut off to a house without abandoning it?  There are many times I can think of a family moving into a home while they are "fixing it up".  Those repairs could take a considerable amount of time.  We've lived in our home for 23 years and still making repairs that would fit under the "inspection" requirements.  We haven't died yet from this not passing a "health and safety" inspection.

We have had record home sales in this city over the past 9 months-why ruin it now.

All,

 Thanks to everyone that came out to help this year to volunteer in any way. The election was difficult, but it looks like your efforts will allow us to retain a Republican Senator from Minnesota (due to the re-count the race—and our work--isn’t quite over yet).

 Due to a late completion of election judge duties I was unable to make the festivities at the Bloomington Sheraton last night (Thanks to Bob Olson, Barry Hickethier, Shirley Carlson and James Turnham for putting the 5th CD Hospitality Room together). There are a lot of individuals I would have liked to thank in person for the extraordinary dedication they showed to our party and our candidates.

It’s always difficult to see the good when so many of the results are poor, but a lot of good did happen. First, I was extremely impressed with the talent shown by our local candidates (most of them running for the first time). It’s always a challenge to run for office, but especially in a year with so many difficulties for our side. Second, after a slow start we showed that the 5th CD can compete with any other region of the state with respect to volunteer effort. The amount of activity in the 5th CD this last month was amazing.

Finally, there is a long list of people  that put in a massive amount of time throughout the year, and deserve recognition. Many have been helping us for years, and many provided new leadership that we desperately needed. But at this time I’d like to point out three individuals:

Red Bartholomew (SD 45): Long before Republicans had finally decided to unify behind their candidates Red spent 6 hours at the 5th CD phone bank every Saturday since April making voter I.D. calls, drastically improving the quality our data for the area he called, and making our Get-out-the-vote efforts much more effective.

Nik Ludwig (SD 58): The Minneapolis City Republican Committee had been struggling for several years since its founder (Lyall Schwazkopf) retired. Nik took over as chair of the City Committee this spring. The committee is now stable, has enthusiastic membership, and is able to provide credible support to its endorsed candidates.

Mary Belfry (SD60): Mary, as part of the East Hennepin McCain organization (Jim Patterson, Chair), created the most dynamic, aggressive and effective Republican volunteer recruitment Minneapolis has had in recent memory. Volunteers were plucked out of neighborhood festivals, Nicollet Mall lunchtime crowds, Vikings games, and even Orchestra Hall. In an era when it’s easy for statewide campaigns to overlook the 5th CD and Minneapolis in particular, Mary has shown how important taking Minneapolis seriously can be to achieving victory.

Thank you for all of your efforts this year. It was good working with you. We have an awful lot of work to do to get where we want to be, but hopefully we’ve set the groundwork for success in the years to come.

5th CD Delegates and Alternates,

 

After a slow start, the 5th CD has become a leader in the state with respect to volunteer efforts. The 5th CD phone bank as been consistently full, and has far outpaced the number of voter contacts made in 2006.

 Thank you for all the time and effort put in on a wide variety of races this year.

There are a lot of places to celebrate on Election Night, but if you are planning on going to the Republican Party’s celebration, be sure to drop by the 5th CD Hospitality Room (open at 9:00 PM). All candidates and volunteers are welcome (after dropping by the 5th CD or Ramsey County office to make GOTV calls of course).

Reviewing the Obama and McCain tax plans

The Heritage Foundation's Center for Data Analysis has conducted
an in-depth study comparing the tax policies of the two leading
Presidential contenders, Senators Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and John
McCain (R-Ariz.).

Unless lawmakers act, the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts will expire, raising
taxes on millions of Americans and threatening economic growth. This
is of particular concern at a time of economic weakness, Heritage
experts Bill Beach, Karen Campbell, Rea Hederman and Guinevere Nell
argue.

The two plans share several key features: both keep portions of the
2001 and 2003 tax cuts in place; both would help prevent
"bracket creep" under the Alternative Minimum Tax; both
add to the federal deficit; and both would allow more economic growth
than if the tax cuts fully expired.

But there are also key differences. For example,

*  Extension of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts. While the McCain plan
would keep taxes at their current low rates, "Senator
Obama's does not extend the cuts for the top two rates."
In addition, the Obama plan includes a new Social Security
surtax on those earning more than $250,000.

*  New Tax Cuts. "Senator McCain has proposed a few other
cuts, highlighted by a cut in the corporate tax rate and a
change in the tax treatment of health care."

*  Health Care. Senator McCain's tax plan for health care would end
preferential treatment of employer-provided insurance "and
replace it with a tax credit that would allow families to
purchase health insurance."

*  Tax Credits. "Senator Obama has many new proposals,
including several new tax credits. Senator Obama proposes a
refundable health care tax credit to help low-income individuals
purchase health care."


The effects of the Obama and McCain tax plans

After conducting their careful economic analysis using tax models and
outside economic data, Heritage's experts made a few important
conclusions about the plans' differing effects:

· Jobs respond more to McCain's plan than to Obama's.

· Overall economic activity more vigorous under McCain's plan.

· More after-tax spending potential under McCain than under Obama.

In sum, "Senator McCain's plan is substantially better at
spurring economic growth than Senator Obama's. This is not surprising,
since Senator McCain focuses on economic growth and job creation while Senator Obama focuses on the redistribution of income."


Judge Bork on the Constitution

Holding to an originalist interpretation of the Constitution is the
only way to avoid arbitrary rule by judges, Judge Robert Bork said
Wednesday at The Heritage Foundation.

In fact, he explained, today's judicial system serves to
undermine our republican form of government.

One significant problem is what he called "Olympianism."
Like the Olympic gods of ancient Greece, today's intellectual
elites will descend from on high to issue their rulings, he explained.
"They are willing to share their superior knowledge or they will
impose it on us."

Help Heritage fight harmful EPA regulations

Heritage has launched a new website, StopEPA.com, to keep the
Environmental Protection Agency "from hijacking the
economy" with its proposed new regulations on carbon dioxide.

tremendous costs on ordinary Americans.

Here are the important facts on this issue:

*  Costs to Ordinary Americans. These regulations will drive up gas
prices, food prices, transportation costs, and the price of
manufactured goods. Regular Americans will even have to
carefully monitor their own greenhouse gas emissions in order to
comply with the confusing EPA regulations.

*  Red Tape for Ordinary Americans. Americans could be forced to
get federal permits if they use common household tools like
lawnmowers or own homes that the EPA deems to use too much
energy.

*  Lost Jobs. The higher energy costs and regulatory excess will
cost millions of jobs.

*  Impact on Small Businesses. Many small businesses could be
forced to close since they are less able to absorb the higher
costs of energy, transportation, and goods, and less equipped to
deal with the legal red tape of complying with such regulations.
The red tape could keep entrepreneurs from starting the new
companies that are at the heart of our economy.

*  Impact on All Businesses. Businesses small and large will be
forced to pay massive new energy taxes. The red tape could keep
entrepreneurs from starting new companies and ventures that are
at the heart of our economy.

*  Reduced International Competitiveness. The massive new
regulatory burden on domestic manufacturers will not apply to
foreign producers, putting American businesses at a
disadvantage.

Commission, has been keeping a close eye on reports of voter
